We had a great time Friday evening! We had about 100 or so viewers pass through. We dodged clouds from about 7 'til 7:45, but it cleared after that and the rest of the evening went well. Here's a couple of pictures of a couple of the kids viewing through my 10" Meade LX200:

A fun night, indeed!

We kind of split a bit. The NorthShore observers take care of the stuff north of the lake for the most part and the south shore guys take care of the New Orleans metro part. And we do a few in Mississippi and the whole gang will pitch in there. One of the NorthShore's best events, we do one for the families with special needs kids, got clouded/rained out THREE times this year, so we never did have it.

Hi David,
I,m about 140 miles north of you. I'd like to do some type of outreach at some time. maybe just a street corner or after church one night, etc. I've got to brush up one mysky objects, etc, first. My first challenge is to find a place where people are located but the light pollution is tolerable. Any suggestions. Thanks-
Bruce

Most of our outreach events end up under moderate to heavy light pollution. The Hammond outreach is at a train station right across from some shops and warehouses. The secret is to choose brighter objects like Jupiter and the Moon. You can also look at M45 or M36, 37 or 38 in Auriga which are all up right now. The second reason for bright objects is that faint fuzzies are only interesting to the most ardent of participants. The best viewing is typically when the Moon is in its first or last quarter, when Jupiter is up and the biggie, when Saturn is up. Saturn is always the #1 object for new viewers to see.

Dark sites are nice, but for outreach, you've got to go where the people are and that may be at you church parking lot. Good luck!

We do the same types of targets due to severe LP at our outreach. Jupiter, the Moon, even M42 and Andromada. At outreach Deep sky doesn't have to be in your face. Most people are amazed that they can see those targets at all. When we lose Jupiter for the year we will go back to Saturn, and it of course is one of the best crowd pleasers.
