I recently purchased a beautiful takahashi em-10 vintage mount with 2 fluorite scopes, ...etc. I committed to the sale and drove 2 hour's to make the purchase before realizing it had no guide port, you can imagine my surprise :bawling:, but I still followed through and made the purchase. I really wanted the Tak FC-76 w/reducer and the FC-50, both also had Tak finderscopes as well. Now for my question. Is it possible to have guide capability added to the mount, or does anybody know if there is an upgrade kit for this mount available from takahashi? While I can probably get by with precise polar alignment and drift aligning, I really wanted to guide, so if upgrading or modifying isn't possible, I'm probably going to sell it.

From what I can tell looks like you got an EM-10 USD mount and not a Temma Jr. I believe the Temma Jr. (goto capable) and later versions eg Temma II have a guide port. You might want to pose this same question over at the Takahashi Uncensored Yahoo Group page. Or better yet give Art a call at Texas Nautical.

Yes, call Art. I had an older EM-10 that did not have a guide port (and the mount drives were not working at all, in fact). TNP upgraded it last year. The gotos work perfectly now.

Congratulations on the purchase, by the way. I saw the ad and wished I had the funds sitting around. Get the EM-10 up to speed and that is a wonderful setup.

I don't recall exactly---over $1.2k but less than $1.5k. But Art and Fred installed on my mount the last of an older model goto drive that they had in stock. Truthfully only Art could tell you how much it would cost to upgrade. It's something they do there at TNR.

Art also had older model drives that were refurbs, and they cost much less. These had guiding ports but not goto. I once used one on another EM-10 I owned. It worked fine, too.

I tried to pose the question at the unsensored Takahashi group, but my membership was denied !!! That's a funny one, I'm not at all inclined to know why either. Wonder who the moderator is and why they would deny my presence there? Well, I never even made it into the little circle of Tak owners, so at least I can't be considered a Pluto  after being kicked out! Thanks for the help anyway. Sure would be nice to know who I ticked off?

I truly don't get it, in fact, message said it's a done deal and no future attempt needed. MODERATOR DECLINED MEMBERSHIP!! The only thing possibly that I can think is, when I was answering the request for information about myself and why I wanted to be a part of group, but everytime I tried to submit, I was over the 200 character limit, and ea time I took more and more info out so it would fit the criteria, and ultimately, maybe I just sounded like useless pond scum by the time enough info was reduced out of profile to fit? I'll sleep tonight, just wish I could get an answer as to why.

That is weird. The owner email address is listed on the right side of every yahoo group home page. Curious what response you would get from a request for information.

Are the TCK0004 Temma jr. upgrades still available for the EM-10b USD3. It says "plug in". Is it that simple an upgrade? Pull out the USD3 and plug in the Temma jr2?

The USD3 upgrade and others are not as simple as unplugging the old drive and plugging in the new one.
There are also the RA&Dec encoders that need to be added.
As to what parts they have you would need to talk to Art.

If you just need to guide a replacement or mod to the cable on the hand box could be made

Are the EM-10 still considered up to date, contemporary, or as older technology? Their pricing appears to be sandwiched between Losmandy and AP. Their payload capability appears to be somewhat less. Are the mechanical properties superior or more trouble free?

The EM-10 is obsolete and the one mentioned in this thread is an early version with an obsolete controller. The current replacement is the EM-11. It uses current technology which also appears on later EM-10 units.

Couldn't you just modify the controller to add a guide port just like you would for a Skyview Pro? You're just adding the ability for an interface to tap the buttons electronically.
