That EQ5 must be creaking!

Does anyone know anything about the makers, Saxon?

Most searches land you back at the shop in Rons link.

I was thinking that too, that's quite a load on that mount, but the OTA,... I wonder how decent it is? I've never heard of that maker before, I hope someone out there has?

What, pray tell, distinguishes a north polar scope from a south polar scope?

Looks like it's a Gregorian rather than a Rumak.

Check this out,

Looks identical to the Eclipse Mak 8, at:
http://www.kendricka...clipse.html#MAK

Do a web search for this scope and you'll find many broken links... dealers not listing it anymore. The reason???
I can guess... :(

One for the northern hemisphere for Polaris, and one for the southern hemisphere for Octans (?).

If they had a return policy, I would certainly try one out.

Well, I'm no specialist but a lot of their other scopes look Synta to me; look at the smaller Mak's and 80ED and 100ED refractors...
Synta might have hidden this one.

I agree; at least *all* the mechanics (including those on the OTA) look decidely Synta to me. It doesn't even have the same f/ratio as the 8" Eclipse, and it has a different visual back and finder.

On the other hand, it doesn't look like one of the smaller "Skywatcher" Maks either...

Those Eclipse Maks had a hopeless mount. This is sitting on what is apparently the latest EQ5 (with RA bearing) with the new 2" steel legs.

I disagree that it's going to be necessarily be undermounted for visual use (at least not if you have vibration suppression pads and don't set up on concrete) - after all, people *are* using that mount with C11s, and I've personally looked through C9.25-ASGT that were more than well served by that mount (at least for visual use).

But of course, if only a Losmandy G11 or EQ6 is good enough for you, then it isn't good enough.

Rechecking the specs...
The aperture (203mm) and focal length (2500mm) are the same. Kendrick just listed the focal ratio incorrectly.
These scopes look like kissin' cousins, if they're not actually identical.
However, if anybody's really tempted by an 8" Mak for $760, they should get one, try it out and report the results!
I'm certainly curious, but not volunteering for the experiment. ;)

FWIW, "Saxon" doesn't make telescopes. Splendour Trading source them from various factories in the orient and stick the Saxon brand name on 'em.
So, you'll see some "Saxon" scopes that are obviously Synta-made and others from different factories.

You're right about the optical configuration (which, given the horror stories about the Eclipse optics, should be a warning).

I'm not 100% sure yet -- on the Eclipse everything had "corners cut everywhere" tattooed on their forehead, while mechanically this scope looks better, so perhaps it also has better optics...

I'm not going to volunteer either, though.

I emailed Kendricks today, instead of information on the scopes they said they had to terminate their relationship with Eclipse and will be pulling all references from their website.

I'll bet it would make a good ash tray.
I would stay clear of this instrument.

This is speculation on my part but - I recently go an Eclipse MAK6 and I suspect it is manufactured by a Chinese firm - Hioptic - here is a web link you might try. http://www.hioptic.c...utov/index.htm. I happy with my Mak6 - but I am too much of a novice at this to make critical judgements.

Hmm. That is a very interesting link indeed. It looks as if they manufacture or at least distribute a lot of scopes.

Seems to be bullseye for the optics, so we know it's a Synta mount with (probably) Hioptic tube. Who volunteers to review it?

Could it be them who make the optics?

Hi Sherk
it is not a Synta Scope, but a chinese one. It is made by Wentao Wins as I have here a pic from a similar 6" one. About the quality we shall no discuss, because nobody want to ofer it here in Germany. My opinion is, the price about 760 $ is too high for this quality.

Here a image of the 6" scope Posted Image

and here the original Bosma 8" image

I like their "Int'l Trade Mansion"...
