I'm thinking about becoming a traitor to the reflector community. I have a question though: Is the Nexstar 80 worth the money? And is it a good scope? Enlighten me, O good and faithful friends. WW

It probably isn't right for everybody, but I think it would fit into your arsenal nicely. You have the N8 for high magnification or dimmer DSO's. The N80 won't take much magnification; the ones I've used top out around 100X. Great widefield views of brighter DSO's and pretty starfields, though - and it's a great little solar scope. I wouldn't be without one. Definitely not the scope of choice for planets or splitting doubles, though. The Double Double is about its limit.

I see Celestron has announced a Nexstar 102GT for another $100. I dunno; at the same focal ratio it'll have more chromatic aberration than the 80mm and it's bad enough. More weight on the same mount, too.

I have an N80, and it works fine. It has a few quirks like any budget scope, but the goto is quite accurate and the optics good.

I've sold my 4 1/2 Newt and the 6" Schmidt-newtonian, so now I'm down to 4 scopes!
