This morning I went to pick up a telescope advertised as simply "a telescope". The pictures showed a wooden box (good!) and a small refractor on some kind of weird looking mount... Best of all, it was just a few miles from my home!

I went over to pick it up and it turned out to be a Royal Astro 60/700. I have seen many Royal Astro telescopes, but at closer inspection this must be the strangest of them all.

At first glance it looks like a pretty normal EQ-mount, but it has no slow motion controls! The little knobs on the axis are just locking screws. Very strange, but actually surprisingly straightforward, just give the scope a little push to follow the object, what could be easier? It's sturdy, easy to manufacture and this one actually looks VERY pretty!

That's a beautiful scope and a rare bird to boot! It's listed in the 1964 Royal Astro catalog and it's also in the 1968 Optica b/c catalog as item #2004 for sale at $149.00. More photos, please!

A search on the internet revealed it is a Royal Astro R-63, a model I had never seen before. It must be very rare and it makes you wonder how such a telescope has found its way to a small town in The Netherlands.

Looks like a 1.25" visual back will fit right on it.

And I'd wager the optics are incredible.

You're right about the visual back: a standard Vixen 1"25 one fits perfectly.

I love it! The mount is beautiful in its elegant simplicity. For a well balanced scope, if the mount has good bearing surfaces which that one appears to have, you don't need slo-motions. I've recently been using my little 1965 60x700mm (APL) on my Televue Panoramic mount and its a dream little grab and go scope.

What a neat, interesting, and pretty unique find. (I've never seen one quite like it.) You are truly gonna love that scope; of that, I am sure. It will be a wonderful grab-and-go! Congrats!

Very nice scope!!

The mount has many similarities to the Tasco 10TE - could be his little brother.

Great find! Love the scope.

I always loved my 60x700 but it's alt-az and I always wished for a simple Eq mount for it. Looks like it will be great fun to use.

Interesting, -- looks like a scaled down Zeiss T-Mount...
