With lighter OTAs you can use lighter mounts as well.  I use one of these   https://www.teleskop...-bis-15-kg.html for my TSA120 which works very well (as for the 120 Equinox).

Nick - maybe get that FS-102 but don´t sell your FS-128 wink.gif you will regret it someday... Next to the Vixen FL-102S the FS-128 was the only scope I ever regret selling... and so I´m very happy now to have both of them back - especially in a really nice condition! I mean my "new" one is from 1999 so 20 years! and condition of most of them will not get better with getting older... As you have one in nice nice condition too (at least it was when I last saw it wink.gif ) hold it and be happy that 5" apperture simply shows more then 4" (what not means everybody should not have one!) wink.gif

Something to consider. Getting the 102 is not contingent to selling the 128!

Have your viewing circumstances changed?

I find myself gravitating towards lighter setups. I can always find something to enjoy regardless of aperture. Look at it this way: FS-102 on DM-4 mount and Gitzo series 5 tripod Vs FS-128 on AYODigi II and Avalon TPod 130. The math works to twice the weight for 26mm of aperture... Always trade-offs...

Oh, Nick!!!  Please say it isn't true! confused1.gif   I learned my lesson the hard way - please don't be like me.

You have to keep that FS-128.  gaah.gif

Ron

Ron,

I have had a secret fetish for the FS-102 for about 4 years since viewing one evening M46 and M47 in the same FOV from my observing buddy's FS-102.

And really, the reduction in aperture does not hurt much. There is a distinct difference but not so pronounced between the two scopes Vs say the FS-128 and my 12" dob which I sold as it resembled a water heater (with exceedingly good mirrors if I may add).

There is nothing wrong with loving both the FS-128 and the FS-102.  Can you keep both?

Cheers,

Ron

I still think the TOA-130 is possibly best 5-inch scope I ever owned, with the FS-128 a very, very close second.  The TEC 140 will go down in history as the best 5.5" scope I ever owned.  How's that for covering my derriere?  lol.gif

Ron . . . Appreciate your comments.  I've often thought of these three scopes too!!  Excellent quality all the way; you covered your derrière quite well.  I decided to stay with the FS-128.  My eyes see a little difference but not enough to pay more money in my retirement years.  Someday, I'll just keep the FC76 and say adios to everything else.

Best to You

To expand a bit more: Yes, the mirrors on that Dob were absolutely phenomenal. Yes, the views were legendary. But I like lenses more than mirrors. And the older I get, the more I prefer smaller / lighter setups, hence my search for a Tak FS-102.

And I will consider what to do with the Tak FS-128 once I get my hands on the Tak FS-102. But yeah, I am feeling like downsizing. Maybe the feeling will go away, but for the time being, I do want to enjoy the - what for me is - ultimate 4" scope for observing.

I am also somewhat old-fashioned and prefer the slightly longer focal lengths with fixed dew shields.  That is why I ordered one of the TSA-120N anniversary models and it has performed great for me.

Cheers,

Ron

Just woke up. Had this most horrid dream about thinking of selling my FS-128. It was horrible I tell ya!

Any thoughts of such a sale have been crushed, burned, tossed off the side of a steep cliff and dropped out of a plane sans parachute!

Back to our regular broadcast! More Takahashi goodness!

I am suffering from a severe case of Takitis. First a Mewlon 250 CRS, yesterday I ordered a FC-100 DZ. Will this ever end?

It will end once you have:

FS-60 or 76
FC-100DZ
TSA-120
TOA-130
TOA-150
Mewlon 210
Mewlon 250 CRS

At that point you will have achieved Takitus Maximus and will be fully infected but complete. There is a Takitus Maximus Extremeus which includes a Mewlon 300 but it is the rare individual that progresses to that stage. It’s terminal phase is usually the Mewlon 250 as well as the TOA-150.

Heck I don’t NEED a 4” ED refractor. Ditto with the 60. I will likely NEVER use them. I have the 130 and the 150. I just sold the 120 and my Mewlon 210. Which I now miss even though I will also never use them since I have the others. And there is an hard to battle back urge to buy both back, as well as get the 60 and FC-100!

Fortunately I do not covet a 300!

The best thing to do is just give in to it. And tell your significant other that even though you have shelled out enough money to buy a new Honda Civic with the full options package once you buy all of the above (used will save you big dollars since a TOA-150 new is $12,000+ but used it can be had for $8,000) it will keep you out of the bars and other hobbies like a quad bike cost much much more.

“One does not simply sell a Takahashi FS-128”

Especially since they stopped making them in 2004!  Where else are you going to find a genuine 128mm fluorite doublet that performs as good as this?

I will admit that there are some 5-inch scopes that perform as well as my FS-128, but I realized they also had to use an extra lens to top this remarkable doublet.

I am so glad to hear you woke up from that nightmare.  Yes, go ahead and buy the FS-102 and enjoy it, too.  But hang onto your FS-128.  Think about the airplane ride you two made together - that was a remarkable journey!  waytogo.gif

Cheers!

Ron

I shouldn't be complaining really. Eyepiece case is set anyway. Storage unit has mount and tripod in easy to carry cases. Scope is in a soft padded case in my living room, ready to grab at a moment's notice.

It is laziness and real life which affect my wish to go out and observe lately and to that effect, next new moon I am out for a serious date with some funky DSOs!

Well, one does, then lives to regret it.

As my penance, I will simply wait for Tak to produce another five-inch doublet.
