Road trip today! Pouring rain, but that's okay. Rented a cargo trailer for this pick up to keep things dry. Pictures later!

Oooohhhhhh, a trailer. Sounds like something I can’t even dream of. Can’t wait for pics later! Good luck with the trip.

It's been a long wet day. Today I traveled a little north of Indy to pick up my first Cave! It was quite literally a "barn find". It had been sitting in a barn unused for years since the owner passed away.

I will have to start a thread on this one because I gots lots of questions! I think this one may have some others scratching their heads too.

Another good Meade 1020 SCT! Very nice condition and very nice optics as well. The helical focuser is great with no image shift whatsoever! Very convenient as a telephoto too! Put in a 1.25" VB, TeleVue diagonal and it was razor sharp even with the 7mm Nagler.

Nice find.  Is this serial 4-2952 by any chance?

BIF:  Mizar AR-1 vs Vixen Polaris

Seems like I recall a post where Polaris owners bored-out the threads in their counterweights; then, either drilled & tapped a set-screw hole, or used nuts & washers to lock the weight in place.

How did that turn out?

The threaded shaft makes sense if you use just one scope on the mount (as designed / originally sold), and turning the weight up/down the shaft is minimal.  But this redneck swaps scopes often, and the adjustments are huge -- and tiresome.  I'm not blaming the mount for working as intended, but my idea was have just a few multi-scope mounts in the shed -- clear the forest...

I'm pretty sure but somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this: I think the smooth-length Vixen standard counterweight shafts and some clones that thread into the Super and Great Polaris also thread right into the plain Polaris mount.

To make this Super and Greatly clean, the later counterweight shafts are only threaded at one end a short distance, and that end threads into the mount. I think the plain Vixen has the same size threads to thread a counterweight shaft to it.

If I'm correct, all you have to do is acquire a smooth-length counterweight shaft and some common counterweights with  locking pin and knob.

You could easily sell the threaded-length shaft and matching weights on the used market; demand seems to be high than supply.

I have a couple of vintage Edmund weights with thumbscrews that'll fit the threaded shaft, but I hate messing up those threads with repeated use.

Maybe somebody would be interested in a swap...

Hard to imagine a Classic Tak purchase as a mistake, but Good Luck!!  (Just the potential of a sooper-dooper rare & excellent find is exciting stuff, even for us bystanders.)

That's a nice little scope, and looks complete.  It's a 7TE-5, made by RAO.  Grab it if you can.

Can't really justify a 7-hour round trip for another 60mm. And the pick-up hours are a limited window on a specific day that I don't have available. But hopefully someone here is local and can keep it from going to a buyer who doesn't know what they have or how to use it (or even just resell it on CN).

Regards,

Chip W.

There are only 3 of those in the US.  None of them for sale.  Must be a 9" AP
