That's the 40x500 finder by Astro Optical.  It is also the finder on my Lafayette Galactic.  They are exceptional scopes but getting a replacement objective may be tough.

I was fully aware of the missing objective. The tube is in excellent shape, no dents or scratches. I've started a search for a replacement objective. Well worth trying to make it whole again

Roger, I have an Empire 40mm objective. It's either 500 or 600. Pm me your address and I will pop it in the mail to you!

Any 40mm objective from a Tasco 4VTE should fit it.

Cooling down for first light. Couldn't wait on rings so pulled off the ADM saddle, temporarily of course, and mounted her up. Cleaned up real nice. Can't believe I was the only bidder on this one.

After swapping parts around I think I've got her just about the way I want it.

I can't believe how light this whole setup is. Carried it right out of the house fully assembled. The scope is so light I had to put a smaller counterweight on the mount!

Hi Chuck,

I didn't think of that. I just happen to have a Focal branded 4VTE. Fits the cell perfectly, but I can't get anything to come to focus.

Carol has most generously offered a 40 x 500 lens which should be the perfect focal length for this tube, so I'll give that a try.

I just checked a Tasco 40mm  VTE (Kenko maker's mark) against my own Lafayette 40mm OTA, the focal lengths are within 2mm of each other.  If yours didn't reach focus, were you trying it with a star diagonal?

If not, stick a star diagonal in there and try again.  The Tasco lens is a 500mm focal length.

I tried today with and with out a diagonal. I wouldn't think the Focal lens would be different, although it isn't a circle-T. I'll try it again tomorrow using several different eyepieces as well.

What is the proper orientation of the objective?

Seen edge-on, usually the one with the thinner edge faces forward. Toward the sky.

The Lafayette objective is air-spaced, but the Tasco is most probably cemented.

Make sure you are focusing at a target far away, not just across the room.

Chuck,

I gave it another try. The best I can get is almost reaching focus with a 25mm kellner fully racked in without a diagonal. I guess my lens must have a shorter focal length.

Took another look. I am able focus on close targets, just not ones farther than say 50 yds away.

Even with mine, infinity focus with a diagonal is racked all the way in, with the H25mm eyepiece.   It would fare better with eyepieces with the focal plane external of the end of the .965" barrel.  Not too many of those.

I need to pull my cell apart, there may be a spacer that should go in before the lens and retainer, moving it backwards a tad.  If I find one I'll let you know.  Check for a spacer in yours.

No spacer in mine, but there is enough room for one.

Slowly acquiring better 0.965” eyepieces to use with my C90 Astro.

Found this on Ebay for $12 in excellent condition. From what I hear, these aren’t really abbe orthos, but rather plossls?

It also came with a 0.965" diagonal (the one that came with the C5s and many classic refractors), but it's missing the chrome barrel.  Does anyone know where I could find a replacement or am I out of luck?

Take your crummiest eyepiece and unthread its .965 barrel.....

Nothing says “I love you” like a Takahashi (even a chipped one). Well done.

I'm waiting to hear her reaction.  My experience is that jewelry, flowers, or a foot massage might have been a better idea, but who knows?  Good luck, Zane!
