I just noticed the comments above mentioning the 9-inch Lohmann Brothers refractor originally at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa.  To clarify about the status of that telescope, I've created a new thread in this forum today.  I didn't realize until just now that the comments and questions above date to 2015!  In any case, I know folks here will be interested in the new thread.  Cheers--

Hey Turk, how's it going?

Hi Jeff!

It is going well.  I'm back from a very interesting journey.   On May1st of this year (2020) I woke up and felt funny.  I couldn't get out of bed.  Nothing phisical but I just couldn't move for some reason.  After what seemed like 20 minutes, I finally "willed" myself up and went to the bathroom.  I spent quite a bit of time in there also, not really knowing what was happening to me.  I finally got up and when to make me and my wife coffee.  I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out the coffee maker.  It then hit me.

I went back into the bedroom, sat down on the bed and told my wife I was having a stroke.

Within what seemed like minutes I was carted into an ambulance and was racing to the hospital.  I remember the technician saying to the other guy in the back that my blood pressure was 185/120.

The emergency room confirmed with an MRI that I had a stroke.  I spent 12 days in the hospital (my wife could not visit thanks to Covid 19) and when I cam home I went through almost 3 months of therapy.

I'm back!   My doctor says he cannot tell I've have a stroke at all.  He says he is amazed at my recovery.  I am too!  I still have some speech issues but they are getting better everyday (It's kind of hard to interact with people when you can't go anywhere!).  It has made me appreciate life so much more.

On July 2nd my son and his wife had a baby boy.  I was here to see it.   Eight months earlier we told them we did not want them trying to come up with a name that incorporated my name like we did with my son years ago.  We just wanted them to find a name that suited them.  They named him Thomas John Terleski, after me.  I am honored.

Hey man, so glad you made it okay.  Welcome back to the living.  On August 13 I had a surgery called, "carotid artery endarterectomy" for a 90% blockage.  An ultrasound alerted my doctor to get me to his favorite neck cutter and the blockage was gone. Now my right brain is pressurized again.  See how the saw bones cutting turned out:

That saved me from a stroke and possible heart attack.  Man, I'm glad medicine is past the Civil War era where miracles are common place now days.  My mom died of a stroke 50 years ago, so maybe my doctors saved me from assuming room temperature right before my 80th birthday.

Say, from the photo you seemed to have found the cure for aging! lol.gif

Tom, I hit the [like] button on your post because I am so happy that you have made such a good recovery and I’m also so happy for you that there is a new little grandson in your life! And he’s named after you no less! Those are very wonderful things. Its so good to hear Good News when so much of it is bad in the life and times of the Great Covid Plague. Congratulations on all counts!

Great to have you back and recovering.

Congratulations on you new grandson. Stay healthy so, when he's old enough, you can turn he to the dark side of collecting classic scopessmile.gif

Wow!!!!!!! I forgot all about this telescope. I attended Wilmington College in 1979, when I lived in Morrow Ohio, and had the chance to go up and see it. I asked my biology professor about the roof dome and he mentioned something about a big old telescope being up there. I found the door unlocked and went inside and up those spiral stairs. Sure as heck didn't look like that in 79.  I don't think the scope was even being used then. What is the status of it now?

Hi guys!  I'm still around, just not active with telescopes anymore.  I sold and gave away most of my Cave telescopes and spare parts and most of my other telescopes.  I did keep a few!

Sold the Brashier but i am keeping the Alvan Clark.  I also still have the 16" Observatory Cave and all it's parts!  Anyone interested?

I never started that project as the stroke kinda changed my life.  The 16" is still in Ohio as my wife and I bought a house in Sunnyvale, California and we moved here last April.  I'm 35 miles from Lick Obsevatory and can see it from our new Eichler house.

The grand babies (We now have two!  Thomas and Lucy!) are fine and growing fast.  My son bought us the house here in Sunnyvale (guess I raised him right!) and he is my landlord.  I have a second hobby of collecting guitars (I'm up to ten!) and I have a new hobby that involves coffee and have just ordered a Samreno Cube espresso machine and coffee grinder!   I love my hobbys and they keep me going!

I exercize regularly (every day!) on a Kaiser spin bike and have lost weight from 192 to 167. You have to keep up with all the heathy people here in California!  I feel great!

I'm 72 now.  I've sold off most of my commercial real estate and have almost officially retired.

We do have very clear skys here in the summer and I've gotten out a scope or two.  I'm thinking about getting one of those "smart" telescopes just for fun.  My wife says I've always have had too many hobbies.  It's what keeps me alive.

Bye for now!

Turk

I am very interested in the 16 inch, I talked to you about it several times in the past.  I sent you a PM
