Knowing the "heart" (or eye) of a camera is important, especially for astro folks.

You want t know what has been changed (new improvements being made) and what is done only by the software algorithms.

Clear Skies!

Hi ccs_hello,

I'm 100% sure the sensors in Nikon are correct except D750 and D810. Both used a whole new sensor package and allows electronic front curtain. It's most likely a new a new design both on driving logic and analog pixels.

D5300/D3300/D5500 are using IMX193 based on Nikon product image. Not sure about D7200 yet.

As for Sony, the A99 is using IMX157. And from chipworks it's a 2 pixels 6 transistors design instead of traditional 2.5T shared. Maybe the additional transistor is related to phase detection, or charge binning in video mode like D4 and 5Dmk3. This is absent from D600/D610's IMX128.

First, a bit about Sony marking code. The first letter is the revision number. Start with A, then B, C... And most likely later generation might have some minor improvement.

The second letter indicates the mono/chroma for the bayer plane. Usually Q is the color bayer and L is monochromatic.

The third letter seems to indicate the package, and this letter is the most confusing. It appears Q for plastic QFP, E/P for ceramic LCC, L/R for ceramic LGA, Z for QFN.

If you can find the level 3 repair manual for Sony, there's clear information for each IC used.

A500 IMX038BQL (D90/D5000 IMX038AQQ, fujifilm CQQ)

A700 IMX021BQR (D300 IMX021AQE)

A900/850 IMX028BQR (D3X IMX028AQP)

A550 IMX049AQR

A560/NEX-3/5 IMX100AQL

A580/A33/A55 IMX080AQL

NEX-6 IMX080AQM

NEX-F3 IMX095AQL

That's all the Sony manuals I have now. But unfortunately, none of the sony 16MP ever used the IMX071. IMX095 is the closest in term of electronic interface, both using 8 LVDS channel. I thought if I found one then it will greatly reduce the workload for hacking.

An interesting teardown post by lensrental.com and you can see the above image where the center of the backside is saying IMX157AQL. Is this where you get the information?

BTW, Sony now seems fixed on using 8 sub-LVDS channel for all its sensors. Decoding these high speed differential interface is difficult. I remember most of them are running at 333MHz, an ordinary oscilloscope is out of question.

Another Update:

RX1 IMX128AQR (The same D600 sensor in LGA package) no electronic first curtain

Additional from chipworks:

Nikon D5 flagship is "Toshiba (Sony) T4K54 CMOS"

I guess that means a toshiba process just like D7100/D5200 and D7200. I suspect the same for D500.

Interestingly, DXOmark reports D5 performs poorly compared to D4/D4s. The QE had taken a major hit?
