That 6" Cave is nice! If you want an 8" redtube/fork mount EdNewt, get the one in Detroit, then you can use that $150 you save on your first visit to the chiropractor.

Is this scope worth the $1650? To a collerctor or end user..

I'm trying to wrap my head around some of these used Astro-Physics prices. Thanks.

The family may have been trying to get rid of (sell) things individually and not been very successful so they turned everything over to an agent. That is my guess as it is now part of an estate sale/auction.

Yes, I replied to this.  I'm pretty passive on anything like this but if it pops up in front of me, I'll check it out.  I told the seller that I hope it goes to a nostalgic idiot like me since the performance is sorry and likely to be discouraging towards astronomy. I also told them it's value is thus intrinsic for memories and posterity.  The intrinsic value in this case does amount to something but probably around the cost of shipping to my preference, that not being the entire point.

Oh shoot, I just pulled this out for a picture and realize I have the comic. I thought I didn't. Well, I don't have the original press board insert that holds the parts. I'll see how the seller responds. My case looks to be a bit nicer, and my parts are nice - cosmetic and condition, standard optical performance. I'd put the best together for posterity and still have a nice unit to pass forward or give away, but it's not a big deal.

If anyone has a nostalgic itch for one, that ad might be a good one to inquire on, never mind me.

Time capsule blast from the past for sure! The comic book is cool but it would have been even cooler if one of the kids shown on the cover was a girl! IIRC, didn't one of the Sears scopes (that came in a pasteboard box) have a picture with both a boy and a girl on it? If girls would have gotten a bit more coverage on science toys and books and more encouragement in science classes back then there would have been a few more of us studying science in college and becoming scientists.

Yep, and the eBay price is $100.00 more than the CL listing - but the eBay does allow for Best Offer.  Personally, unless there's been a sudden demand for Caves, I think even $595.00 is too much for a 6" mid-70's Cave. Also, it's an f/8, not an f/9.

When I first saw the ads in S&T for these, I could't stop laughing for weeks!  But now I'm wondering if, for the right price, this might be something I could put in my roof with the sidereal technology goto kit I have (that would let me mount the controller below and out of the daytime heat), in place of my Nexstar 925GPS who's encoders appear to be messed up...

Seems like several of the entry-level scopes sold by Sears in the 60s & 70s had that same picture, and I agree with it.
