To whom it may concern:

I've been reliably informed that the Zeiss Terra pocket binos have now moved to China instead of Japan for manufacture. Thus, all of the Terra line are now being manufactured in China under Zeiss supervision.

There is also a new colour scheme offered on these glasses; as well as the original grey and blue body, you can also choose a predominantly black coloured body.

Regards,

Neil.

I take it it will be straight forward to get an earlier made in Japan version that are still on the shelf.

New colour scheme looks nice. Let's wait and see what their country of manufacture will be. Personally, I prefer Made in Japan wink.gif

Word has it that these are still being made in Japan, so perhaps someone with knowledge from the source can chime in to resolve this "Made in" issue of the current Zeiss Terra ED Pocket binoculars?

Thanks Erik,

It seems I have been misinformed by a couple of retailers. This morning, I received a reply from Zeiss sports optics confirming that the Zeiss Terra pockets always have and will continue to be manufactured in Japan.

My apologies for the mix-up.

Neil.

I attach a copy of the email from Zeiss:

Dear Mr. English,

Thank you for your inquiry to ZEISS.
The Terra Pocket were and are still made in Japan, and we have no reason to change this.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best Regards,
Klaus Felgenhauer

You're welcome Neil. And invaluable that you also contacted Zeiss and got word back from the manufacturer that they are still being Made in Japan.

I applaud you for making that effort waytogo.gif

So thankfully we now know for sure that these affordable beauties still come from Japan with a nice new color scheme to boot.

Hello everyone,

Thanks a lot for all the interesting informations.
Last week I bought a Terra 8x25 here in Germany.

It clearly states China on the back > see pictures.
I wonder how this can be, after reading the email from Zeiss…
Thanks
Johann

Hello Johann,

Thanks for chiming in! Could you possibly post a better image of the underside of your 8 x 25 Terra just so that we can see it more clearly?

Did you purchase the Terra from a reputable dealer?

There is something fishy going on here.  And who is telling the truth?

Thanks

Neil.

Well, it clearly says China so then it doesn't really matter anymore what anybody at Zeiss said.

I find that rather disturbing.

Just to be clear, China or not, the optic is exzellent.

I would say the same as the Swaro 8x25.

One more development: two folk have chimed in on my website stating that their recently acquired Terra pocket glasses  have China marked on their underside and on the box.

With recent events, threats and comments by the China's Communist Government about Australia just being the scum on the bottom of their shoe to be stepped on and wiped away I now make a point to ask if any of my purchases are derived from China. Unfortunately many local sellers are resorting to untruths rather than admitting the country of origin. I am disturbed Zeiss would resort to such a tactic. Regardless even prior to my personal boycotts it was clear that the 8x25 Terra was the stand-out of the line that many attributed to being made in Japan whereas all others were made in China. I think there are a number of valid reasons to reject this new Chinese made product. If you want a set of Terra 8x25s now is the time to seek out the Japanese versions why they still can be found on shelves.

It depends on how much of the ZEISS Terra is made in Japan, and what's the rest made on the mainland China, and eventually with the CDGM (China) glass, ha, ha.

It is like with the cars: 10% of the value manufactured at a Volkswagen plant is enough to call it Volkswagen, and when you buy it, you will eventually find that your car has been manufactured in Belgium instead of in Germany.

Sorry,

JG

A call on all to keep on topic and stay out of politics, as per our ToS, in the discussion on the origins of the Terra 8x25.

Thank you.

Hello again,

I received a phone call from the Zeiss marketing team this afternoon.

The Zeiss Terra pocket models have now switched to China but they reassured me that the quality is identical to the earlier Japanese models with the same packaging and warranty as the older models.

I may test drive the new Chinese-made black model against the original grey and blue Japanese model and report back in due course.

Sincerely,

Neil English.
