Great, they'll be here in the comments. The idea is not to put every acronym and abbreviation that a (specialized) astronomer (or texting teenager) can dream up but just the really generic astronomy ones that get thrown around such that they make a newbie-proof wall of words.

We ended up discarding a lot of things: galaxy types, mirror polishing terminology, cosmology references, variables used to calculate GoTo pointing models, planetary geomorphology terms....

EP-related abbreviation EoFB, edge of field brightness (?) gets mentioned in a number of threads. Difficult to look up elsewhere, some examples here http://acronyms.thef...ionary.com/EOFB but don´t quite fit our terminology, except maybe for the third example.

EP-related abbreviation EoFB,

I've never seen that one until now. Is it too specialized? If it's an actual commonly used abbreviation, we can certainly add it, but MINRATBSJGL*

* = Maybe it's not really a thing but someone just got lazy.

ROR- has 2 completely different astro meanings.  Roll-off roof and Residual Oil Remover (I think).

Is the Residual Oil Remover for when you overfill your reflector with Telescope Oil?  :p

Ken, Jon Rista made a post where he was using things like FPN and PRNU.  We also have things like FWHM (I think) and a lot of imaging abbreviations that could be added.  Probably need a dedicated section for General, Imaging, the Manufacturers you have, and a bunch of other stuff.  Might also want to add a section for Image Processing terms.

Ever wonder why APO, unlike achro, is capitalized when it is a contraction and not an acronym? The same goes for EQ and EP.  Why not DOB instead of Dob for that matter?  wink.gif

If you type EoFB in the search field, (like I did to find the meaning of the abbrev., a lot of threads pop up. And when Starman1 uses the abbreviation, I'd call it a thinghappy.png

I'd call it a thing.

OK. It's a thing.

Might also want to add a section for Image Processing terms.

Sounds like a job for B&II!

Would be a lot easier if people would not use abbreviations when posting. Some are very obvious but others I have no idea what they mean and do not want to search out the meaning. Please just type out the full wording. ;wljvf;eoavaernvaer

This would be a good practice in the "Beginners" forum where novices may be overwhelmed with these abbreviations, but I see no problem with their use in the general forums. Searching out these "hidden" meanings is a way of life for amateurs like us. Our searches for their meanings, more often than not, shines light into areas where our knowledge needs broadening. I feel that people that spend time with us are familiar with searching out this information. If not how did they find their way here?

I read people writing OP regarding someone else wich to me seems to be the person who opens a topic or questions about something.

What does OP means?

I don't see FC on the list. Usually "field curvature", but sometimes "false color".

TLM Telescope Limiting Magnitude. Usually the dimmest star magnitude seen visually through a telescope.

Dmm Diameter in millimeters. Usually a measure of telescope aperture or exit pupil (EP). Which is another acronym.

Thanks for keeping up this list.  I made a quick scan of the list and would like to offer a couple of points.

I may be wrong, but I think most people consider DSO to be deep sky object instead of deep space object.

Flourite should be spelled Fluorite under the entry for FPL.

Or alt least define all TLS'a**.  Otherwise it is an exercise in frustration.  Like the TLA for telescope tube that I had to look up and now don't remember what it is.

** TLA = Three Letter Acronym

I sometimes read about platesolver or platesolving.  Would like to know what that entails.

And an appeal -- please guys take a little time to make your messages clear.  This helps novices and those like me who have a CRS* problem.
