There is a short sequence of "Adam" [at the end of the film of the same name] giving a talk beside the Mount Wilson 60" telescope.

Pathé News Archives has a number of videos of astronomers using historical instruments.

Unfortunately YT's search box does not respond to obvious astro search terms including Pathé..

One of the funny things we noticed is that both the 60" and 100" telescopes at Mt. Wilson have Telrads mounted on them.

attachicon.gifTelrad.jpg

There's a "review" of a half night spent with the 60" over at

http://www.scopeview...untWilson60.htm

I have something new on my  bucket list.

That is a really great report on the 60 inch. Better photo's  and description than the current Sky and telescope article about the 100 inch.  Based on those reports, I'd do a tour of the Hooker, but book a night with the 60 inch. I'd sure love to do that.

The 100-inch Hooker telescope primary mirror's glass is "Green".....Looks like it's made from about 4 1/2 tons of melted down turn-of-the-century "Green" coke bottles (Circa: 1917)....but what a historic telescope.  See the following website link.

The UH24 International Planetary Patrol Camera on Mauna Kea, HI in 1990.  It is long gone and replaced by huge telescope. BTW, the rental car lost the clutch as I was driving downhill and had to do a bootleg turn to stop from going off a very long way down!  http://www.alpo-astr...sh/MAUNAKEA.pdf

This is what AMOS Observatory on Haleakala (Science City - Maui - 10,027 Ft. elevation) looked like when I use to work there for AVCO Everett Research Laboratory and the USAF in the 1980's.  I was assigned to many of the astronomy projects using the 1.6M telescope....including an M-87 core measurement project which lasted for several months.  At that altitude...with that big scope using a special video camera and a monitor...in real time, M-87's famous jet was quite apparent.  Great seeing...great skies for astronomy on Haleakala.  1st. link shows AMOS Observatory (AVCO) on the right with the University of Hawaii's observatory complex on the left....2nd. link is the AMOS observatory.

Here are a couple of photos of the dual 1.2M scopes (on one mount) and the 1.6M scope that I became very acquainted with that I used for various projects (astronomical research and otherwise) at Haleakala (AMOS) Observatory when I worked for AVCO Everett Research Laboratory and the USAF on Maui back in the 1980's.   They were some awesome beasts!  See attached photos.

P.S.  Refer to my previous post #33 in this thread for details about the scopes and AMOS observatory.

January 1989 this dish began VLBI operations at the USNO Time Service Station, Miami, FL. 18-meter radio telescope literally found in a junkyard near the Haystack radio observatory in Massachusetts and had been operating for many years. Not sure about its history, but it was very old before it arrived in Miami.  Searching for info on historical dishes is difficult at best.

Well, maybe this is the reference to the old 18-meter dish:  Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory   https://en.wikipedia...omy_Observatory

It was an old dish for sure, but worked okay.  It was very slow to slew, so our new 20-meter dish was much faster. In fact it was so fast it would shake the quadrapod and receiver so much we lost signal.  So much for weak Quasar signals :)

At any rate, ,if you are bored watching paint dry, then: http://www.alpo-astr.../RADIO_DISH.pdf

After the Miami USNO Time Service Station closed then the Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) (http://www.cstars.miami.edu/) took over and used it until just recently and stopped operation.  So, this dish is now history.
