Subject: But sad.
From: "John Huntsberger"

Fred,

I went to my garage this morning at 11:15 a.m. and found that my Pelican Cases of eyepieces and photo equipment, along with my Denkmeier Binoviewer were stolen. The main door was closed but the side door was closed and unlocked.

I have no list of what was taken other than what I can remember.

I heard two voices about 4:30 a.m. and thought it was my renter and friend, who is a good friend, coming in. It was not. I suppose that's when the theft took place.

Eyepieces: Brandon 48mm, Pentax 40mm, TeleVue 31mm Type 5, Pentax 21mm, Pentax 14mm, Leica adapter and 32mm ocular, TeleVue 2" Barlow, Celestron 1.25" Barlow, Celestron 12.5mm Astrometric, Celestron 40mm, Celestron 35mm and at least two of my Moon filters.

In another Pelican case was a Leica R6 35mm camera body, Questar 1.25" adapter, Questar camera mount, Leica finder adapters, Questar counterweights, Questar direction booklet, and a Questar full-aperture Baader solar filter.

In another Pelican case was the Denkmeier Binocular Viewer with a pair of Celestron 30mm eyepieces, a pair of Celestron Axion 19mm eyepieces, and a pair of Edmund Optical 15mm eyepieces and the StarSweeper.

My three telescopes are still intact along with my 20 x 80 binoculars and Leica Trinovid spotting 'scope.

Fortunately for me, they left the Celestron $99.00 aluminum case with my complete set of Brandon 1.25" eyepieces and the Celestron sale eyepieces there.

There may well have been more, but I can't remember now.

The 'barn door' is now locked, but the horses are gone.

I have called the police, but there is probably no hope of recovering
any of it. Thanks for reading this. John

Mr. Huntsberger might want to post here a general area for people to look out for. Anyone asking for payment for the items and gives a location to send the money may help to narrow down the search. Since you don't usually see a Denk being sold that should be easy to spot. At least it was not his 25" obsession. I have heard of that happening. :(

Maybe I'm being stupid or something but wouldn't a thief be at a disadvantage trying to sell our kind of equipment?I mean wouldn't it be easier to take tools or something?I have enough trouble buying from a dealer let alone some stranger with no history or warranty.I suppose there is always E-Bay though.Anybody come across questionable sellers?I haven't.Just what would you do with a strange thing like a binoviewer if you wanted to unload it,most folks don't have a clue what it is let alone what it may be worth.Anyway I'm glad they caught the bugger. How did they do that?Any idea.I don't want to join a group just to find out :)

Got this extra info from Ron Boe.Nice to see some bad things get resolved in our favor.I believe the info is from the nextar group. Thanks Ron.
Tom;

Here's Johns' post verbatim on the NexStar group:

Hi All,
A phone call at 11:15 a.m. this morning from a fellow who walks his
dogs, as does my son, along Shoal Creek under the 45th Street bridge
about five blocks away from my home, saw one of my cases placed by
someone in the bamboo growing there where kids gather to write graffiti
on the bridge and who knows what else. Upon getting closer to the one
black case he saw, there were the other two. My name tags had been
taken off the cases.
Upon looking inside the one small case he found the Denkmeier Optical
Company card I had placed there and called them. Russ Lederman
answered the phone and knew of my loss as I had already ordered a new
binoviewer from him and he, in turn, had sent me a lender. Russ gave
the finder my telephone number. The fellow who found the cases called
me, brought them over with the contents untouched and nothing missing,
and I handed him five twenty dollar bills in exchange. The finder is
a U.T. student just having moved here and living with his parents right
near the find.

:D
