Mine came in today and I grabbed it from the mailbox as I was headed for our dark sky site.  Now my Nagler 31 has been my gold standard for great wide field views so I had that with me for comparison.  I used my 140 NA f5.7 petzval and a friends 16" f4.5 Teeter.  Transparency was a 6, seeing 5-6ish.

The first thing I checked was afov, comparatively.  The Masu was a smidgeon wider than the 31N.   I started looking for seagulls.  I have mild astigmatism as does my friend but except where M13 crossed the field stop there didn't seem to be any issues as we moved star fields and globs across the view.  I then looked at the Veil and California with both ep's.  Same-same.  I think the maker of the Masuyama has a winner.

The Masu eyepiece is significantly lighter than the Nag so balancing between 2" eyepiece changes isn't the octopus act it can be when pulling out the Terminagler.  I like this and I'll get some use in this fall.

What about edge aberrations?
It seems they do have 85°.

Like I said, when moving star fields across the view, there wasn't anything noticed in my scope. Flat field, no elongation or comet tailing of the stars. Keep in mind the petzval is dead nuts flat field.  I still have to run this thru f8, 12 and 15 scopes.  The Teeter had a very slight field curvature at the edge but far less than expected for an f4.5 without paracor.

I used to own one of the UO Extra Wide Fields and the aberrations were awful.  I couldn't sell it fast enough.  I took a chance on this, fingers crossed, that the Masayamu name wouldn't be etched into another one of those.

The packaging was very good and Agena threw in a bolt case for it. Kudos to them.

I look for a long focal EP, light, very light, for my newts, this one seems appealing. Do you think it is better than à Swan 33 or à Moonfish 30 ?

I am at f4.8 without paracorr and f3.5 with paracorr.

Jimbo, no Paracorr in the Teeter, correct?

Oh I see you hit that in the second post.  That's pretty impressive if not only is it not astigmatic at f/4.5 (which was my fear) but also possibly somewhat corrective of coma.  I went ahead and ordered one too.  Probably won't get it until the second shipment shows up in November, so I'll happily read your further adventures.

Regards,

Jim

I have no experience with those ep's.  The 16" teeter is a beefy scope and not phased by a N31 change-out through most of its range.  The Masu 32/85 should be especially appealing to the lighter dobs which can be more sensitive to multi-pound :>) eyepiece changes.

I'm surprised. Obviously not the same optical formula as the Kasai, which is a good thing. I've gone from pass to maybe on this one.

Very interesting.  It's advertised as weighing 450 g or about 1 lb.  That would not upset balance in my scopes as much as would eyepieces like the 31 Nag.  That's quite light for a premium wide field ultrawide.  Does really have the 20 mm eye relief?  Due to my own astigmatism, I wear glasses at exit pupils much above 3mm.

John  The eye lens is quite recessed.  I too wear 1.5 readers and I tried using them.  No go.  I never used the rubber eye shield.  It may be 20mm relief but I was in fairly tight to see the field stop.

Mr. Smith  I don't recall focus adjustments.  I used this as a finder ep then switched to a turret.

I remember thinking that the field stop was out of focus as stars drifted across.  I just looked in daylight to see what was going on.  When your eye is centered and solely moving around to see the edge you're looking down the tapered barrel.  You have to slide your head to the side a bit to see the field stop.  No issues, just an observation.

Thanks Jim. Look forward to some reports on testing with f8 or 11 scopes.

And now, a most interesting find.  The Tele Vue Dioptrix is a perfect fit.  I discovered that today after looking down on both ep tops and realizing how similar they looked in diameter.

Wow! Definitely report back how well it plays with the dioptrx. If it works well, I'll be seriously eyeing one of these.

Sold out???   I never had a chance! :(  :(  I'm surprised this sold out but not the regular 2-inchers.  Seems like response has been very positive so far, hopefully all these eyepieces will go into regular production.

The 32mm never appeared on the KK website, I guess their regular customers claimed them all in advance??

*EDIT* OK, Agena says early November, maybe they aren't sold out after all.

The "regular" two inchers sold out too Scott, but they got another shipment.   I believe that for now, these will be regularly produced as the original batch of 60mm (or maybe 50mm) sold out and was replaced at least two times now.

Perhaps that's what they meant by improving on the Kasai version - DioptRx compatibility.  That is awesome news.

>>>At the end of 10 will be in stock! Deluxe wide horizons domestic eyepiece of multi processing

sounds good!  I have to think this would be better at f/10 or longer.  Would be fun to experiment with it though.  I wonder if it has lateral color like all other wide fields.   The Tak LE/Masuyama design does not have lateral color.

The FOV the Pentax XW 30mm and 40mm must be better-corrected at the edge with 7 and 6 elements.  The XW40mm does well at longer f-ratios though and does not have a negative lens (barlow) in front.

Any viewing reports  on this eyepiece ?

How does it  fair against a Nagler 31mm ?

How is it on edge correction or is  it softer in the outer  10% of FOV ?

Is it sharper or have wider FOV than the Nagler 31mm ?

Thanks
