And so it begins....

2.5" Cave Observatory mount in the classifieds.  Most times I would have already told the seller I'd buy it, but having just moved into the house, and getting a new dog, and countless other new home expenses, there is NO budget for this right now.  Not even one I could squeak out.  Tugs at my heart because I used one of these extensively in my early teens.

Hmmm that one looks familiar!

That looks like your old mount minus a few modifications

I had initially thought about buying the whole lot and flipping everything else.  I could have dispensed with the funds for minor period, but in the end, no time and I was having a hard time figuring out just how much I'd likely have in the mount when all was said and done.  Truthfully, I'm kinda surprised the price is this low.  No matter for me.  I already have things I need to sell from previous transactions I've gotten into.

Thankfully, this is still restorable.

Mark is a very fair guy, if he gets a good deal he gives a good deal. His prices are always very reasonable.

I saw that! It would be a perfect match with that big Cave eq mount that is also in the CN classifieds.

this looks interesting 10" Mak

http://www.cloudynig...nd-accessories/

Tak FS102.  That has to be a classic by now.

A 10" Mak for 1700?? Something is wrong with this picture.

Maybe not.  Not exactly a well known builder.

John Gregory is the inventor of the Gregory Maksutov design and is very well known.  His workmanship was supreme.  Sadly he was killed in an auto accident a few years back as I recall.  If I had the cash I would grab this OTA for the history of it if nothing else.  I saw one of his scopes at TSP many years ago and it was a work of art.

To all - I have been in contact with the seller of the 10" Mak - he is legitimate, he teaches astronomy and physics in Caracas, Venezuela but wishes to emigrate. The telescope belonged to his grandfather and was custom made for him by John Gregory himself - the designer of the Gregory Maksutov, which is the basis of the Questar, the C90, the ETX90, countless telephoto lenses, tracking cameras for NASA - it's one of the great designs in history and this one was made by the man himself. His telescopes are known to be works of art and this one is no different - it is massive, 350mm in diameter - Gregory's Maks typically have a f/3.5-f/3.7 primary and come in at f/14-15 after the secondary magnification. To accomplish that for a 10" scope requires an aspherical primary. This one almost surely has an elliptical primary. The nearest thing to compare this scope to is the legendary 10" Gregory Mak made by Astro-Physics - a scope that you would be lucky to get for $20,000.

Now - he would sell it to me today - but honestly, I just don't have the time or the space to take on another project, and I already have what I consider to be a world-class 10" reflector with custom made optics that I spent years perfecting. As wonderful as this scope must be, I just don't need it. But this is an historical scope and without doubt worth 5-10x what he is asking. His goal is to emgirate from Venezuela and he cannot do that before accounting for his grandfather's prized telescope. I would urge those of you with time, space, and cash to investigate this issue further.

(edit: Trust but verify of course. I say the guy is legit, but you must draw you own conclusions!)

Saw this one today: http://www.ebay.com/...LQAAOSwSlBYu0VG

3.5" objective, possibly a triplet witha 16" focal length.  The only thing on the front of the lens is Spencer.

A search for Spencer brings up a microscope maker from the early 1900's.

Any ideas?

I have been trying, but have not gotten any replies.

Looks like the ad is gone?  I kept going back and looking at it, but I already have 2 10" scopes (1965 Celestron 10 and a 10.25" f17 Dall Kirkham), plus a 15" Obsession, plus 2 8" scopes.  I'd need a bigger house to add that and it won't bring more time or clear skies.

If anyone here gets it, post lots of pictures and make us jealous with observing reports!

Dave
