Rich this one is not stopped down as it is for the longer range operation. The closer focus model is stopped down. Or more precisely it has a smaller corrector of that diameter.

Any comments about the 1966 Questar with Quartz mirror that's been on eBay forever? I do recall it was originally listed for $5000 and is now available for a still-steep $4500.

Considering its condition, my gut feelings says a fair price would be in the low $2000s or maybe even the high $1000s.

I agree on value. You may notice that I don’t post listings that are a waste of everyone’s time because of absurd pricing.

I have to admit that I like seeing scopes, Questars and otherwise, with a bit of character. It's kind of neat to see the marks, dings, and, in this case, stickers, handwriting, and such that show where they've been over the years. That '66 Questar definitely has all of that in spades. But, yes, the price is near what one would spend for a new Questar with fresh optics.

I inquired and the seller stated he could accept $4100.

I did not reply.

What is the new asking price? I don’t have an AM account and can’t see details.

As a matter more for general discussion, what are others’ thoughts on how much more a quartz mirror adds to the value of a vintage Questar? If the market value of a 1960s Q with Pyrex mirror was $X and one in the same condition but with a quartz mirror was $X + $Y, what would the value of $Y be?

I know there was a robust discussion of whether Zerodur or broadband coatings are worth their cost. The question I pose is related but somewhat different.

Maybe the value of $Y is $300-500?

Sorry for the late reply...

Yes, the owner says he has reduced his price by $700, now down to asking $5900.

I feel like offering him $4000, and I'll drive down and pick it up at the end of the month (especially since he would prefer a local pickup), but I'm sure he'd refuse.  The couple of photos he offers do show quite a bunch of documentation along with the equipment, and the shipping barrel is included.

These don’t seem to go for under $5000 (unless one is a lucky SOB who spots a buy it now on EBay in the first 10 minutes and still has to find lots of parts to restore the kit).

I’d bet that anyone who offered a max $5000 cash, pick up might get it. “It’s OK if you want to hold my offer for a few weeks to see if you can do better...”

Too bad for me.  I've already spent $5000 on my new one last year.
