Considering its condition, my gut feelings says a fair price would be in the low $2000s or maybe even the high $1000s.

I have to admit that I like seeing scopes, Questars and otherwise, with a bit of character. It's kind of neat to see the marks, dings, and, in this case, stickers, handwriting, and such that show where they've been over the years. That '66 Questar definitely has all of that in spades. But, yes, the price is near what one would spend for a new Questar with fresh optics.

I inquired and the seller stated he could accept $4100.
I did not reply.

I know there was a robust discussion of whether Zerodur or broadband coatings are worth their cost. The question I pose is related but somewhat different.
Maybe the value of $Y is $300-500?

What is the new asking price? I don’t have an AM account and can’t see details.
Sorry for the late reply...
Yes, the owner says he has reduced his price by $700, now down to asking $5900.
I feel like offering him $4000, and I'll drive down and pick it up at the end of the month (especially since he would prefer a local pickup), but I'm sure he'd refuse. The couple of photos he offers do show quite a bunch of documentation along with the equipment, and the shipping barrel is included.

I’d bet that anyone who offered a max $5000 cash, pick up might get it. “It’s OK if you want to hold my offer for a few weeks to see if you can do better...”

These don’t seem to go for under $5000 ...
Too bad for me. I've already spent $5000 on my new one last year.
