No.  I placed it here first to give CNers a chance to own a Zeiss without spending a fortune.  No takers, so it went to eBay, where ANYTHING can happen.

Which is clasical in the way most of them say how the price is always to high on just about everything. So very true for the high end stuff.

Don't I know it.  Modest, too.

 

I've gotten some great deals on CN, and/or because of CN Members, so I don't mind returning the favor.

 

When I talk about free advice that affects scope buys:  Terra recommended Royal scopes; Terry, Robert, and several others recommended Edmund refractors; LOTS of members recommended RV-6 reflectors.  I haven't regretted any of those purchases.  (Not just recommendations:  We get into nitty-gritty details, as in this very thread.)

Possibly, but speaking for myself, a 60mm scope at 10 bucks per mm is of zero interest to me. I'm not a collector, and this scope has zero fun factor, and in fact BB is letting it go because he has 60mm Japanese scopes that are better - for him. So do I. I'm sure this Zeiss is the ne plus ultra of Euro-optics but frankly, it's ugly and boring to me.

I bought a beat up scope on Ebay, a 60mm f/12 alt-az, for the wooden legs. 22 bucks. The scope was was caked in 50 years of dust. The mount was broken. I got my legs and was about to commit the remainder to the parts pile but what the hell - I cleaned it up. Focuser - smooth. Lenses - clear and no chips. Tube - some scratches, not many, no dents. She looked nice all spiffed up. I fixed the mount. Nice positive motion. Turned it on the sky. Floored. Utterly perfect star test. Junk scope turned out to be a keeper. Now a prized possession. Not for sale. I use it all the time.

 

Before that - bought a Tasco 10TE that was overpriced at $300, or so they say, but it was in great shape and I wanted an Astro Optical scope. It also has become a prized possession. I also use it all the time.

 

I have many thousands of dollars in my "real" scopes with custom optics and hour upon hour of assembly, fabricating, testing, adjusting, refitting, etc. work. I don't get to use them much in my light polluted city. I love them just like I love my $22 noname blueboy 60mm Towa that performs like a champ and goes out day after day. Does that make me a cheapskate? If so I'll wear the badge proudly.

If the T2 trounced the Goto, the Goto would be going.  But yeah, a couple of years ago, I suggested that the current "vintage" scopes that would survive us nostalgic Boomers would be the pretty ones -- at least for the Scope As Static Display buyers / collectors.  Future amateur astronomers should know which brands & models are likely to have the best optics (thanks in part to this Forum), but how many of those folks will be around 30 years from now?  (We've had lots of separate discussions on whether our hobby is shrinking or growing among the younger people.)

 

Consider my Criterion RV-6 and my Mizar P-100.  Both are competent reflectors, but if either survives for long after I'm gone, I'd give better odds to the P-100.  It's prettier, and has a smaller footprint -- along with its original box & documentation.

 

The first time you use a Telementor, you can't believe it's such a small refractor.  Functionally, it's almost peerless.  But it's not pretty, and it's not rare.  I hope my grandchildren's generation will appreciate its performance, but who knows?

True, but not everyone can afford to pay the Zeiss price.  And, it's still a 60mm-class refractor.  And, it's not the prettiest 60mm-class refractor.  Yes, it has superior contrast & resolution, but there are billions & billions of Japan-made 60mm refractors that perform well for their prices.  Yes, it's built like a tank, but that means it's much heavier than its Classic peers -- Mayflower 815, Monolux 4380, Tasco 7TE.

 

And I imagine there are lots of amateur astronomers asking, "Why buy a 60mm achromatic refractor?"

I believe that is the problem with Zeiss in general.  You used to be able to go to APM or Baader and find lists of old Zeiss stuff.  I bought a lot of things from those lists.  Zeiss eyepieces showed up frequently on Amart and looked old or weird and you could get them for a song.  I only owned one Telementor and never the mount, but know three Zeiss collectors, and when I got tired of some of those Zeiss accessories I set my price with two of them and they didn't even flinch, just forked over the cash.  My Telementor moved on and I am Zeiss-less.  At present my little 60mm Mayflower fills the role the Telementor played.  I think it every bit as good optically as that Telementor was and don't miss it at all!

I like the looks of Telementors. They have a cool, heavy-handed industrial look, and the tripod is made out of the same wood that our old school desks used to be made of. They are unique! I liked my T2 but I like my T1 better. I can see parallels with them and Tinsley scopes in that industrial, minimalist, no nonsense look.
