A great thread! Fascinating scholarship here.

A question about transliteration: We see both "Kagaku" (as in "Kagaku Gahu") and "Kogaku" (as in "Nippon Kogaku"). Are the words related? If "Kagaku Gahu" means "Science Illustrated," does "Nippon Kogaku" mean "Japan Science?"

Hi, it's been a while this thread had started. Recently, I had a advice from Mrs.k she takes exellent APs on galaxys and also used GOTO 21cm reflector(http://galaxies.blue.coocan.jp/) . She say 'you should explain about the some words here. Maybe they seems to be confused.'

Kagaku=科学  it's 'science',  pronunciation is just it writes.

Kagaku Gafu=科学画報 it's a magazine issued in 1923 to1961. and hers's the miss speling in 'Gafu'.

It should be write as ' gahoh', though the goverment librally writes as 'gaho'.

The government say ' You can use also as "o" or "oh" on long sound.

                         https://www.boston.u.../passport7.html

Gahoh= 画報= a magazine of pictorial report.

Kogaku=光学= optics.  Though, there's so many same pronunication word ' kogaku' in Japanese.

工学=engineering, 高額=expensive, 後学=younger scholar,  and so so many words........

Nippon Kogaku=日本光学= the company name of 'Nikon'. They started as '日本光学工業株式会社'

It's means 'a limited liability company for optical industry production in Nippon'.

In 1988 they changed the name as 'Nikon'.

The old like me feel the nostalgie on 日本光学 as high end optic company in old days.

Hiromu

some adding:

科学画報 was issued by Seibundo Shinkosha Publishing Co.,Ltd.

天文ガイド is isuued as astromical branch of 子供の科学 by Seibundo Shinkosha Publishing Co.,Ltd in 1965.

They intended to educate for junior high school students.

子供の科学( kodomo no kagaku) is most old scientific journal for chilren issued in1924.

科学 is also old magagine isuued in 1931 for the elder students.

We had seen Goto opic advertisements in the back covers each of them in '70s.

In '80s it was changed to Takahashi.

Hiromu, thank you for sharing and please thank Mrs. k for the clarifications.  After a number of years of trying to get my head around trying to communicate in writing in Japanese (mostly by trial and error that evolved into significant use of Google Translate) I remain convinced that it's a written language that one needs to grow up with instead of trying to acquire good syntax in use much later in life.  I would like to think that a few of us have been able to effectively communicate on Japanese blogs and classics forums, but we are fooling ourselves if we think we are anywhere near getting it right.

Hi, Stew44

I'm glad to see in cloudy nights. I often see you in Garakuma's forum site and admiring of your efforts and enthusiazum for the glorious vintage telescopes. and think Garakuma's site also looks as if the deep data base for the old Japanese telescopes and their back grounds. The forum members have far more wide and deep informations than me. I'm not so many.

and yes, Japanese is difficult even for us. and think many foreigners would be more! Japanese language have complicated and suttle meanings or nuance on each 'kanji' and 'hiragana' characters, many different expressions or styles for a tiny actions or impressions. ( for me, same in usa slungs I often see in this site )

Though maybe I think, almost not so different for the emotional impressions to see the good sceneries or good night skys, and also excellent telescopes. If not correct in Japanese, we can understand well enough.

Thank you for your photo! Years ago we had a thread "post a picture of you and your classic telescope". It was changed to "post a picture of your telescope with or without you". I get it, I'm shy too. Shyness and being enrolled in the "witness protection program"perhaps has limited the "you with"lol.gif , maybe. Most pictures are without you. Anyway, nice to see the proud owner/enjoyer in the same frame!

I have a Goto 453 as you do. I love alt/az viewing and this mount is the best. The other best is the 60mm 451. Goto san  nailed it for me like 60+ years ago. And the mount and OTA paint, yikes must be twenty coats.

And about that beautiful case...beautiful I agree but...I'm just 6' with a positive ape index of 6'2" and each year it gets a bit more difficult to fully grasp the handles on the ends of the case. It is so long! Fingertips only. I'm shrinking I suppose.

Laszlo out of Brooklyn were importers of Goto telescopes. There is a PDF catalog from the 60s somewhere.

Thanks for the information. It appears these telescopes are fairly rare. I acquired it after one of our local astronomers unfortunately  passed away. It was his father's scope. Everything in the box was there except the ring gear for the azimuth slow motion. The adjusting mechanism was there but the ring collar could not be located. It is easy enough to adjust the azimuth so it does not impede the function. All else is in fine shape. I occasionally use it for special observations in order to keep tradition alive. It is remarkably detailed on the moon and planets. Current project is watching Venus as it becomes a larger crescent over the month or two.

Oh goodness yes. The case was designed by a chiropractor I believe. No handles and heavy. I considered putting handles on the case to make it easier to move but so far have decided to leave it as it was when built. I still have trouble reaching the altitude adjusting mechanism when using the scope as it was designed for a rather longer armed ancestor of the human species as yet undiscovered by science. Perhaps a scope boy is in order! "Oh scope boy, clockwise please" "Thank you" . Does yours have the slow motion azimuth adjustment ring? That is the only part missing. It appears it was a toothed gear on a bushing. That was the only part missing and just could not be located. But yes, you do endanger your back when moving the scope in it's case.

I am awful at sizing photographs and digital image manipulation. After a twenty year career in science I still am hopeless with digital technology.confused1.gif

Beautiful Goto....thanks for sharing.

Stew put together all the Goto threads he could find on CN back in 2017.  Chuck Hards added it to the Useful Classic Scope Links thread that is locked and pinned on the first page of the Classics Forum.

enjoy!

Thanks for the index. There are so many paths on CN alone. This is a real service.

A 453 sold on FaceBook Market Place in Jan. and I saved some photos of it.

I'm sure it would be very difficult to find one, but for what it's worth here's a photo of the ring gear.

Ah that's Ed Zachery as I pictured it had to be. It was odd that this was the only piece missing. Everything else including eyepieces and the combination solar/ standard prism wedge diagonal was there. BTW I don't have the courage to use the Herschel wedge from back then. I do have a modern one for my other scopes. I do have an astronomy friend who was an engineer and is a very good machinist. It is fairly obvious how to measure the tolerances for the bushing. Gear cutting might be a bit more interesting.  I am not pining for manufacturing one but someday perhaps. The azimuth mechanism is there so maybe it might be worth him examining it. No telling where it got to over the years.  Thanks for the picture. That helps a lot.

Having taught geology to freshmen and sophomores in college I always try to stay out of the picture in case someone didn't like the grade! It doesn't happen much anymore but old students would run into me and my first words were "I can still change the grade; you don't have a gun do you"??flowerred.gif . Actually I rarely had to give out a poor grade so no witness protection program or would that be professor protection program....................I hear it is dark out there in the Arizona desert though.............
