Just acquired off of Craigslist a Celestron CB 80--80mm x 910mm altazimuth refractor Japan. Wooden tripod mount is Vixen made and is worth the price of admission. Came with a Celestron 26mm plossl silvertop eyepiece. Anyone with experience with one of these?

I once owned a Premium 80 which looked exactly like this scope.

I have had 3 of the vintage C-80's from Japan. One of them was the CB80, and I never found out what the difference was, unless it had maybe a different accessory when it was sold.

I have one that I rescued from the trash. It had been left out in the weather for years until the tripod rotted off and the scope hit the ground.  The lens coatings have some damage but after cleaning it gives excellent views. I would love to have one that has been well taken care of.

C-80s are great scopes. Mine is definitely one of my keepers!

I like 'em but it always seems like there's someone who needs it more than I do...  That's kinda what happens when one has that William Optics 80mm F/7 FD..

As usual with a new scope or eyepiece it clouds up. This time Cirrus clouds from what's left of Hurricane Irma. The rain bands as far north as the Ohio River.

Great scope! I found the mount the weak link at higher magnifications. At one time my most used scope due to it's ease of portability.

Hi everyone! I'm very new here but excited to have joined this commuinity. I was given this same telescope by my neighbor but want to compensate her (I hate taking things for free) What do you think is a fair dollar amount to give her for this?

Thanks!

My C80 gets lots of use as a solar scope for white light with wedge and also narrow-band (Hα, Ca-K, Fe-XIV, and Na-D1/D2).

Congratulations on the fine scope! Can you upload an image of it? Better to see it’s condition and judge value.

Great idea but still a bit in the dark as to what a fair dollar amount would be to give in the form of a gift card. $50, $75, $100?

Thanks!

Here you are. I left off all the slow motion control knobs as well as the azimuth friction knob for clarity sake. Has its original wooden tripod and additional lens (26mm PLoSSL ) and accessory box. IMG_2691.jpg IMG_2692.jpg IMG_2693.jpg

Its a great scope as it is but the mount is frustrating.   You have the choice of either greasing the mount for easy operation and tolerate a "meridian flop" or have stiffer grease but not very smooth movements.   My solution, and one that is historically accurate, is to replace the mount with a vixen polaris mount head.   The legs and the scope bolt right up to it.   The vixen polaris mount head seems to be a very good combination with this OTA.

Great! That will help in stability. While the mount is certainly its weak point, the mounts strong point is the ease of mobility. Provided the optics are good, you have a nice scope. I’ve owed five iterations and all had similar, very good views. Price? I sold one earlier this year with the same mount for $200, about 2hrs drive away. As a testament to my feelings about their quality, I still own two of these. One on the Alt/Az mount, and one on the Polaris mount. Yes, the Polaris is more steady. Clear and steady skies.........
