Hello,

Still trying to improve my deep sky results with my setup.

Not always easy in altaz mode but get some fun with the Sony.

You can see an outcome of a video live session here :

https://www.youtube....eature=youtu.be

Here are 2 images taken last july. Not enough exposure because of the wind (the 16" aperture doesn't like it much frown.gif )

Thanks for your comments.

Michel

That live video is amazing.  Wonder how this setup would fare on a reflection nebula?

Is it possible to share how you do this, how do you set up, do you tether you camera to a PC, use guiding etc? Would love to try this out as I have the A7S camera though dont have the kind of skies you have. Also how long can you image on an alt az mount like yours wouldnt the image rotation become an issue?

You video makes me want to go and but one of those ridiculous low-light cameras immediately!!

Wait, I already have two a7s cameras already(modded/unmodded)....

Someday I'll buy a nighttime scope....

Wish more people had cameras like this,

I can't get enough seeing what other people are doing with them!!!

Props for all the work in setup of a scope like that!!!

The A7S allows short exposure and I usually practice with 20" subs (see pics datas). No need for a pc to run the A7S, nevertheless I still have to use one for the Rotator (Pyxis LE from Optec) in order to synchronize its speed rotation with the field rotation. Consequently I'm not restricted by the field rotation and it's possible to take images for hours if needed (juste have to add many subs of 20" on DSS wink.gif  )

a7s_t400.jpg

If you don't use a field rotator you can still have results (subs from 10 to 60" depending on the area you point the telescope... max speed is at the zenith, and the field rotation is zero at east and west...)

The telescope that I use has a very precise mechanics (and an optics as well wink.gif ) and the tracking is smooth enough to allow 2 hours without drift (but you have to proceed to a sharp adjustment of the tracking parameters in the servocat system)...

Hope this will help...

I usually observe under a city light polluted sky frown.gif  and the pics above were taken during my summer hollydays grin.gif

One more example with a very short total exposure time for the type of DSO

Excellent results for a Dob!!

I love the live view video.  The live view on the Sony A7S is second to none.  It's great to hook it up to an HDMI monitor for public sessions.

As is often is the case I am guilty of asking you questions based on the fact that you have awesome equipment, but in most cases if not all, it is the skill of the person who gets the most out of whatever equipment he/she has. Hats off to you sir these are some stunning images. bow.gif bow.gif

Can you tell me what specific version/model of the Sony A7S you own (i.e. I, II, ?) and any modifications you've done to it?  I want to buy one ASAP!

Thanks for your feed back.

I have a sony A7S-I (ILCE 7S) 1st version, modified with Astrodon filter inside (I have made it done by a specialist... not me smile.gif )

The A7S 1st model is not impacted by the star eater issue (not before 30s exp / reason for subs < 30s) as the A7S-II and other sony models are impacted from 3.2 sec exp.

Clear Skies

Michel
