OK, now it's time to tell everyone what aspects of classic gear you really like.

I really like the consistent high quality of optics from Royal Astro, Swift, and Manon.  Haven't tested a bad one yet from those folks.

I really like f/20 achromats, and longer.

I like refinishing mahogany.  Boxes, tripods, whatever.

I like orthoscopic, Erfle, Kellner, and Plossl eyepieces.

I like white tubes and shiny metal mounts.

I like well-made rack & pinion focusers.

I like the caliber of people I meet who appreciate the older scopes.

Bob, I'm pretty sure Mayflower and Manon sourced objectives from the same maker.  It could even be RA, judging from the DPAC tests I've seen.  Good stuff.  waytogo.gif

I like my cheshire eyepiece. I can see the primary, secondary, spider and how they all align in one shot. Lasers are a one trick pony.

I like how easy some of this stuff is to work on if you just go slowly and carefully.  Metal, glass, and wood.  Even mechanically declined people like me can handle it if you are methodical enough.

I like well-made 50mm scopes.  The Micronta & Unitron 105 are good examples.  Do a Messier marathon this spring with a 50mm scope.  It's more fun than with a larger scope.

I  like a well cared for piece of equipment.   Recently, I bought a Meade LX200 10" classic OTA, and am now the third owner.  When I first set eyes on this SCT my first word was "Wow!", it looked brand new.

I like those little old refractors from the 60's that come in wooden boxes, like the Tasco, Sears, Manon, Swift, Unitron, etc.

Especially the 128, 3TE, 7TE, and 6339a models.

I also like my UO Circle A eyepieces, and my homemade scopes with their bare aluminum tubes.

I like the unforgettable view I had of Jupiter in the late 70s in a friend's 6", F/12 Newt reflector that was in a stove pipe tube with a single stalk secondary support and a "plumber's nightmare" equatorial mount. There was a dual shadow transit going on at the time.  I will never forget this view and this scope - superb image burned into my brain.

I like thinking about the people who used a telescope before my turn to take care of it.

Yes, I love the evidence of handwork and thinking about Hiroshi or Hideki or Sin-Itiro working on my scope in the optical house..

I LIKE

- Simple telescopes that perform admirably .

- I like telescopes and mounts that will never be obsolete , always repairable.

- I like being reminded of how people used to observe, it reminds me of just how spoiled i am.  A good 60 mm or 80 mm classic achromat or 4.5 Newtonian or an RV-6.. they're relaxing, easy , a breath of fresh air.

- I like the camaraderie of the members of this forum.  This forum and the binocular forum are special .

-I like the vast knowledge represented by this forum . Its fun being amazed by what obscure bits and pieces someone posts..

- I like the willingness and helpfulness of the members of this forum to help anyone one with their classic scope. .

- I like the fact that Chuck 86'd his "hairy eyeball" avatar .

I like scopes with wood parts that aren't cheap particle board or fiberboard.

I like the optics and looks of long refractors, new or old.

I like the philosophy that people have towards classic scopes in that they are an instrument to be treasured and not just a disposable gadget.

I like Classics because they'll never become broken-down and irreparable, nor obsolete.

I like old surplus Edmund ATM stuff.

Edmund Scientific objectives!

I cut-n-pieced this together from a 1962 Edmund catalog:

Hi Cadets,

before going outside to observe you need something to keep your bones from rattling on

the cold nights.

Spam burgers, the recipe is online. I like these! don't be shy, take two!

I like TAK and AP scopes.   I like really solid mounts.  I like the idea I am about to mount one outside on a pier permanently.  I like the idea I no longer have to carry a mount outsidewaytogo.gif

I like working on these old things.

I like having a place where you can talk about this stuff and people are not trying to correct your spelling all the time or putting you down because your equipment may not be exactly their favorite.

I like clear dark skies and warm nights.

I like it when people don't take things to serious or personal.

I like coffee, a piece of cake and so on and so forth,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
