Tasco?

What and when was this?

https://www.ebay.com...ogAAOSwWGxaoXMI

Only thing on it Tasco is the riflescope finder.  Main scope looks to be homemade refractor with a projector lens.

After a couple of participant complaints, I took a chain saw to this thread. Try to keep it on topic, you know we've gotta nurse this baby along for another two weeks until Brian makes us a new one.

Nothing personal to the dismembered...

geesh, we just cant have any fun anymorelol.gif

Well shoot.  Just 4 weeks ago I was driving right past there daily.  Given the EPs it comes with, that's a really decent price.  I know it's probably the most under-valued scope that shows up here, but that's because so many were made.

Nice looking Super C8+ popped up on local CL:  https://losangeles.c...6530701465.html

Has the Meade HD tripod.  Unusual though as the optical tube is the later type used on the Ultimas (No ribs).  Possible OTA replacement??

Colonial Optical Co Inc imported the Mayflower brand of telescopes. That Export tag I believe has been found with a few other Asahi telescopes. So this might be before Colonial started importing scopes under the Mayflower brand. An old one for sure....mid to late 1950s...maybe pre 1958 possibly.

The finder scope in there looks like a criterion. OTA looks PENTAX to my untrained eye.

The posted version above is the kind you want. Best mount (cast iron with brass or bronze inserts) and best focuser (cast iron also), and a better level optical quality (IMO).

Forgot to mention earlier, the desiccant bag has Asahi Optical printed on it. So indeed Asahi, forget when the name changed over to Pentax...but there are lots of Asahi Pentax camera products etc. back in the 60s IIRC.

I hope someone gets it. That’s a helluva deal for 40 bucks! Those are excelent and rare scopes.

Vixen Super Polaris DX mount. This mount has some problems and issues that the seller described pretty good.

Wow, an estate sale flipper that actually can be bothered to describe the item instead of going "Dunno, found it, now let me slap a huge price tag on because I assume it's valuable".

The invisible hand of the marketplace: anyone buying something like this, would likely have some knowledge about it. And this would cause a downward pressure on the actual selling price.  If listed in an auction at a low price (this one was listed at $90), then the seller is taking a risk it will sell for a lower amount than if they tried to squeeze top dollar. Or, they accept a lower, if any, profit they make to buy more stuff to try to sell at a profit. Faster sales mean the possibility of more sales which can be... it's economics 101. We all pout when someone lists something for X times the average selling price, but I would think few highly overpriced things sell at the asked for price.

Now, If I'm buying, I like this seller's style. I like the under-priced buy-it-now items better.

When I sell...sc**w economics 101! I go for the jugular! Just look at my horrible feedback here as a seller  mrevil.gif

Where would one acquire the missing parts to that Vixen SP/DX thought? That tripod base plate won't be easy. Those bidders must have parts already I'd assume. It's always sumthin.

I didn't see it until late last night and wondered why it hadn't sold?

I'm happy now cause I don't have to think about it or Keith's Swift, which sold for higher than when I saw it night?... still seems like a bargain.

I was offered more by a generous buyer and graciously accepted. I changed the ad price to record the true selling price in case members are using CN classifieds to determine what classic telescopes might actually be selling for.

Nice looking  Unitron  on Craigslist   Very nice shape   just right size for my....it will have to wait due to vixen fluorite priority

Seriously though    I have a question     It says 1985    so it is 33 years old....

if it were a guitar it would technically be okay to call it vintage but real vintage folks would say yeah   but it is not from the golden age  of  late 50's through early  70's or   well that's way past when CBS bought out Fender and made x more guitars per week

Was there a golden age  for the Unitrons et al?  Is a 1985 less desirable than a 25 year older one?

Is that also true for other scopes?   Does this question belong in another thread?   Please advise

The ones with the best optics seems to be the ones from the 50's.   That seems to be the general rule.  The mechanics over the years remained the same.  The optics being the heart of the scope I would say that the ones from the 50's are to be enjoyed the most.
