The 3 guest speakers are in! Are you?

If you want a registration form, and have not supplied your email address to me, please do so ASAP as seats are limited!

My email address is the best method of communication and is available to you via IM (as per the TOS)

Guest speakers are as follows:

  • Dr. Paul P Sipiera - Author and Planetary Studies Foundation President and CEO who will speak on space rocks, and will bring in part of his extremely large collection for us to view.
  • Dr. Jennifer L Anderson - Professor of Geoscience, Winona St. University, who is expert in impact craters. I believe that she has done work for NASA, and she was one of the guest speakers at last year's North Central Regions Astronomical League event.
  • David H Levy - Canadian astronomer, science writer, co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 in 1993 which collided with the planet Jupiter in 1994 and discoverer of various other comets and minor planets.

Registration options are as follows:

  • $25.00 for the 3 night Star Party Only
  • $35.00 for the Saturday afternoon Lecture Series Only
  • $50.00 for the Party, Lectures, and Door Prizes.
  • I don't like astronomy and won't attend.

Option 1 includes the 3 day event, use of the facilities, and munchies by donation. Munchies include the typical cookies candies, pop, bottled water, coffee, hot chocolate  midnight chili one night and midnight stew the next.

Option 2 is to reserve a seat to hear our 3 guest speakers.

Option 3 includes options 1 and 2 above plus 1 raffle ticket per registrant for eligibility to win one of the many door prizes we'll have. Last year we had a couple pair of new binoculars, a few lasers,  flashlights, books, maps, and for grand prizes new Explore Scientific 68° and 100° eyepieces. We expect similar for 2018.

Option 4 includes none of the above, but we will think about ya! (Not!)

The 2018 Eastern Iowa Star Party will be held at the St. Ambrose University Menke Observatory in Dixon, Iowa from Sept 7th through 9th. The observatory, along with its piered scopes has a climate controlled classroom as well as women's and men's restrooms.

The observatory is located at the Wapsi River Educational and Environmental Center, so nature hikes and bird seeing abound... there is also an antique truck museum near by!

The Dixon Legion serves great burgers and meals and is only 5 minutes or so from the site. Other restaurant options are near by. Ask about lodging, but generally a small tent on field works fine.

Seating is limited so if you have not supplied your email address to me, please do so ASAP so I can send you a registration form when they are out! As per the TOS, IM me for my email address!

Yes, it would have been nice to have a larger room, but that is the largest room we have on-site. The logistics of having him speak in town and then having the star party out of town was too great.

Fellow Amateur Astronomers!

The 2018 Eastern Iowa Star Party is drawing near! Speaking of drawings, keep in mind that we have a great prize being raffled off... full registration includes 1 chance towards a new 102mm Explore Scientific Carbon Fiber Triplet!

If the grand prize and our Bortle 4 (SQM 21) skies for 3 nights aren't enough, we have 3 great guest speakers on Saturday afternoon... Dr. Paul Sipiera and his giant collection of space rocks... Dr. Jennifer Anderson explaining what impacts can occur when they hit other things... and Comet Hunter David Levy talking about finding these things as they pass through space... and when they hit things like planets!

Space is limited to about 50 participants and we only have about 12 spots left... I expect those to disappear fairly quickly based on impacts from upcoming advertising in Sky and Telescope Magazine... so don't procrastinate!

https://www.skyandte...a-star-party-2/

Clubs with representation at this event include:

Cedar Amateur Astronomers
Popular Astronomy Club
Naperville Astronomical Association
Wilton Iowa Observatory
Folks from the Cloudy Nights Forum
Quad Cities Astronomical Society

... if your club isn't listed, consider remedying this! Full registration for this 3 night event is only $50.00!

As a reminder, the event will be held at the St. Ambrose University Menke Observatory just outside of Dixon, Iowa and located at the Wapsi River Environmental and Educational Center from Sept 7 - 9

Registration fees range from $25 to $50 and are used to support the event activities which this year include guest speakers Meteorite Expert Dr. Paul Sipiera, NASA Impact Crater Specialist Dr. Jennifer Anderson, and Comet Hunter David H Levy.

I have a post (This one!) of info on Cloudy Nights for you to check out:

The Iowa Star Party just changed their dates to the same as the Eastern Iowa Star Party! I hadn't yet registered for ISP, but was looking forward to going to both of them.

ISP isn't what it used to be (though the skies and location are great), so I'm still excited to check out Eastern Iowa.

For those of us who only want to observe is there still adequate room on the observing  field for 'walk ons'?

Hello Jeff,

How is the area looking with all the rain these last two weeks?  Anything we might need to bring to keep dry?  Looking forward to hopefully clear skies.

Lenny

Hi all!

To cut to the chase... we are still a go for the Eastern Iowa Star Party event! ...and Saturday afternoon presentations and prizes will happen as scheduled at the site and in the building called the Eagle View Eco Center Assembly Room.

Now the details:

Tropical Depression Gordon has kinda messed up what we anticipated as another beautiful skied event... it is possible that we do get some clearing, BUT, in case we don't, we have set up contingency plans:

Assuming that the skies are poor and rain is happening, we've rented the lecture room for Friday as well as Saturday... rather than set up gear in your assigned spot, you can drive over to that building and umbrella it to the meeting room where we will have relocated the beverages and munchies.

I'll be picking David Levy up from the airport on Thursday, so on Friday afternoon, we can chat with him....let me know if you want to give a spontaneous presentation on Friday afternoon... and if staying Friday nite, or when need be, I ordered 4 movies for us to watch... in keeping with the comet, meteor, asteroid theme, the movies are Armageddon, Deep Impact, Meteor Storm, Deep Imact, and a 1958 classic, The Day the Sky Exploded!

Also... for folks tenting it or now sleeping in still loaded with gear  vehicles, we can get the bunk house at $10 per bunk per nite... but we need a minimum of 8 takers to make this happen.... if ya want to take a bunk, let me know ASAP, otherwise I'll assume not... there will be restrooms and showers available to the bunker folks!

Let me know your thoughts!

Clear Skies!
Jeff

Thank you so very much for attending the 2018 Quad Cities Astronomical Society's Eastern Iowa Star Party!

Friday seemed a bit sketchy until David Levy chatted with those attendees present and Grant Harkness and Alan Sheidler stepped up and gave talks on the Wilton School Observatory Project and the 2019 NCRAL respectively... we then topped the night off with watching a movie called Deep Impact.... one which David Levy was conferred on... and had the midnight chili at 8:00 pm... we had 24 in attendance that day/night.

Saturday was an incredible day.... Drs. Sipiera, Anderson and Levy gave incredibly interesting, educational and entertaining presentations followed by great Q&A sessions. We gave away 16 door prizes between talks... and had raffle winners for the second place...Televue 1.25" 2X Barlow, and the grand prize, the 102mm Explore Scientific Carbon Fiber Triplet. We moved midnight stew up to about 7:00 PM and while we ate watched the movie, Armageddon.... the evening cleared a bit and we spent the night doing imaging and viewing... hanging out with David Levy as he continued his search for comets... Jennifer and Dave Anderson hung out with us and checked out the various views thru the various scopes set up... we had 44 in attendance that day/night.

Sunday was a sleepy day... filled with camradre and additional scopes being set up for that evenings astro endeavors... we expected clear skies that night... David Levy asked if we could visit Field of Dreams as this was close by and held special meaning to him. David asked Jennifer Anderson and husband Dave to join as it was on their way home, finding that the movie held a special meaning for Jennifer too. After the visit, Jennifer and Dave continued home to Minnesota and I dropped David off at the airport shortly after 3:00 pm.... I didnt get a good count of the number of attendees, but most stayed, so I estimate about 36 stayed until at least white light.

After white light, Monday early morning, we were down to about 8 people... we had a great time with the continued realitively clear skies... great talk about the event, gear, what projects we were working on, and we finally all turned in between 5:00 am and 6:00 am... everyone was basically up and packing by about 9:00 am...

And there ya have it... a weekend in the life of your not so average amateur astronomer!

If you took pics... of the event or astrophotography... I'd appreciate copies for archiving, our news letter, and our upcoming new website...

Shakespeare and I will see ya again soon!

Clear Skies!

Jeff

PS ----- The Astronomical League asked when the 2019 EISP was going to be held... It will be Septemeber 27 - 29 2019!!! Mark your calendars now!!!
