I got a 2nd quarter 1977 die cast orange tube Celestron C8 yesterday and it is missing its front cover. Anyone know if this will fit? Any other suggestions?

Shower cap? I think they’re selling them as “salad bowl covers” now.

Farpoint should be able to provide a definitive answer.

That of course is a possibility but for long term I want something more solid to protect the corrector since it is so close to the front. That’s why showercaps work fine with Newts, the optics are deeply embedded.

I seem to remember seeing a picture here in the past of a nice aluminum one, that looked almost like a re-purposed aluminum pan or plate? That would work well.

Check this link. I've used these for other early (black) tubes and they worked fine. Only $15! Other shops sell the same. You used to be able to order direct from Celestron. Maybe you still can but I couldn't find that link quickly.

The vinyl dust covers for 8" newts also fit well. How about a pic of you're new scope?

Save your $15.00 for something else. Sadly, I know for a fact that this cover will not fit a 70's vintage C-8. How do I know? Because we inherited a 1970's C-8, that lost its corrector plate cap. I purchased this item. Even after sanding down the edge quite a bit, it still did not fit.

Thanks so much! smile.gif

Terra, if someone with the skill and knowledge on how to use 3D scanners and printers had an original C8 cap, they could reproduce it, along with the, they'd have a 3D file in the end to continue making them upon order.

I need a front dust cap for my ATCO 60mm as well, and am considering finding someone to make me one.  The accuracy of 3D prints at a hobby level even, is getting amazing resolution.  Cost may be prohibitive though.

I have access to a 3-D printer. That is a last resort, but if I do, it will just be a plain one to fit over the top.

Cool.  I'll have to see if they have them for the C5.

Question:  Didn't I read in the last week you were done with SCTs?  wink.gif

Hi Terra -

The Farpoint Dri-shield will fit your orange C8 - they are nice - they have a dessicant pack inside of them.

Looks like a nice scope (special coatings) - I see it came with the longneck prism, I found those to be quite sharp - just be careful with the slip fit.

I hope you got a wedge/tripod with it also?

Thanks Jake. I did get the wedge and tripod. The wedge is nice, just needs some minor work. The tripod is uber nasty! I am keeping it but it will take some time. Probably an outdoor, summer project. In the meantime, I have a very nice Celestron Wedgepod for my C5 that will also work for this. I got the trunk too, but it really is a lost cause.

Does it have the deluxe lattitude adjuster?  I have a spare I can send you for free.

Something you can dew is buy a dew shield because I think you will end up needing one anyway

and then use a shower cap on the dew shield.

that's what I dew.

Hah.  Looks just like mine but mine is deforked now and the straight-through finder is long lost.  And my pod has a fair amount of rust on it  too.  Saving it for some MacGyver bino mount idea unless I re-fork it. (Doubtful.)

Anyway, you can also check the frugal astronomy thread.  I think there were several ideas, again having to do with bowls and/or salads.  LOL.

Nope, it’s a barebones Celestron wedge.

If that tripod is chromed (don't know) clean and then try rubbing a spot with tinfoil.  It really reshined the dull spots and even removed some small rust spots on my 2080 tripod.   Worked pretty well on my 64 Falcon Futura too, back in the day.

The early C8 uses a aluminum cover that goes outside the cell, this is the one you want.

Yours may have used the aluminum cover, I see 8 screws around the corrector, a early

model, and you have a aluminum secondary holder, also early.

A little later the nice aluminum cover was replaced by the Bakelite cover, which is okay, and

it grips the inside of the corrector cell.

Almost every Bakelite one I've owned I've had to place felt dots around the cover's edge

because the cover's tabs loose their gripping power, especially in the cold when the cover

shrinks a good deal.
