Anyone listen to Rush today? He tore into us amatuer astronomers and the Asheville Astronomy Club.
Rush could care less about light pollution. He sounded very boyish.

I heard it and just thought it was ridiculous. He thinks hemming in light pollution is anti-business. But his real bias for “architectural” lighting came through. But this is an old saw with him. He also hates turtles.

Caught this too. He can be a PIA on anything scientific. He got carrying on last week about the big bang and how there still had to be "space" before the big bang! Ah, science illiteracy, it's overwhelming now days.

Rush could care less about light pollution. It was tough to listen to the jerk on this subject. He sounded very boyish.
Just on this subject? >.<

I sent him a few well chosen words including some URLs on light pollution and the IDA. He confuses LP with the Global Warming/Climate Change crowd. I pointed out that no one talks about LP because there's no profit in LP and you can see the effects here and now as opposed to temperature and sea level rise in 50 years. Maybe he will wake up.

I always cringe when he talks about anything Science related, he must have flunked 10th grade science class.

I'll be the first to admit that Rush is sometimes right about things. However, what he's talking about here is part of living with other people. You can't plop a pig farm in the middle of a community because then everyone has to deal with the smell. You can't blast music at 150 decibels in the middle of a suburban community because then everyone has to deal with the noise. It's the same thing with light pollution: there comes a point when you have to realize that what you are doing doesn't just impact you. Smells, noises, and lights are all examples of things that people have to reach a consensus about. It's really just being considerate of other people, in both directions, which is something that we all should have learned in grade school. Maybe Rush will reconsider his words when his grandchildren can count the number of stars they can see on two hands.

I'll leave you alone when you leave me alone by controlling your light. This hits my pet peeve with light pollution. You ask for any concession whatsoever on light, and the pro-business crowd acts like you want to take away their first born child.

He just has it in for the regulations where he lives that won’t let him light up the beach. On another note, Goethe’s last words were “Mehr Licht”.

Me and light pollution have something in common. Neither of us give even a small pinch of #$&@ for him. I actually thought he'd died. Didn't care about that either.

Probably 99.9% of the world's population doesn't know very much ... if anything ... about light pollution. That doesn't make them "bad" people. They need to be educated about the costs to society that's an integral part of the light pollution problem. Even a great American patriot like Rush Limbaugh should take the time to become better informed on this topic.

I think Rush put us in with the tree hugger crowd by mistake. No one told him WHY LP is bad for our hobby. He thought or was not told the reason and thought it was just because. Watch, he will restate his comments on this.

I read the article and quite frankly I think this is a case of overkill. Some string lights are not an electronic bill board, search light or un-shielded street lamp. If amateur astronomers want to be known as light fascists then these light pollution ordinances are going to be voted out and fast.
It will only take a couple of zealots to ruin the reputation of every reasonable minded astronomer.

I heard him today on this topic and was just LOLing at his annoyance about it. He has a bad taste in his mouth about light ordinances because of the overly restrictive ordinances he has to deal with because of the turtles. This is definitely a sore topic with him!
Really, most people just don't see it as a problem unless they actually start observing. And I don't see how the businesses can't adapt to this. Just put up a shade for the light strings so that the bare bulbs cannot be seen from outside the property, problem solved. I found the article he was referencing, let's see if I can post a link:

He has a point about the turtles. They don't come out of their nests until May or June, but the lights have to be out on March 1 and stay out until I believe November 1. You can believe 8 that months of no lights is a bit much, without hating turtles. Our county is a bit more sane, lights out from May 1 to October 31.

I do not know that any club members had a hand in the complaints against this restaurant or not. It would be interesting to hear directly from any members that are also CN's participants.
Since I am not a member of this club I will give an estimate of the club size at 200. The city has population of 89,000. This would work out to 0.22% of the cities population. If people want to make any kind of progress against light pollution it should be a friendly outreach, not anti-business and hostile or these ordinances will disappear at the next election.

This wasn't the first time. Limbaugh disparaged efforts to reduce light pollution years ago.
