Post pics of your Tasco 7TE series scope in this thread.

It is widely held that the 7TE scopes, in both 910mm and 1000mm, were among the best 60mm equatorial scopes ever sold.  Products of Royal Astro by all accounts, we seldom hear anything bad about them, and many happy owners.  I've been lucky enough to have owned about ten over the years and still have several of each focal length.  I've never been dissatisfied with the optical performance of one of these -and- they all test very well under DPAC, as does just about everything I've handled from RA.

One of my favorites is an almost brand-new condition 1000mm specimen.  I'll try and get photos up of some of the others.  Let's see yours, along with your observing impressions.

I've wondered at times, if Tasco had stuck with RA as their fabricator, could they have possibly been seen as a serious competitor for the high-end Unitron scopes in the larger apertures?

Here's my 7TE, the model before the 7TE-5 serial number 262111, I think that makes it 1962

Notice the focuser does not have the long draw tube of the 7TE-5, a Vixen 1.25" adapter will

screw into this one if I remember correctly.

The drive has this neat collet type clutch. My case looks like it went through a smoke house

with a bunch of hams but it smells okay.

Great thread!

I thought you also own Unitrons in nearly the same focal lengths as your 7TEs and 10TEs?  I'd love to hear your dispassionate take of how they compare optically, mechanically, DPAC, etc.  I think this is a ranking, along with Swift, Carton, Edmond that most would find interesting.

I really like that clutch system!  On the 6336 (like the Towa 339) the drive gear swings up & away from the worm gear, and locks in either position with a tiny lever bar.  Sometimes that bar can get in the way.

In the Registry, I have serial numbers for the 7TE-5 from 560684 to 963012.  Send me a PM if you'd like your Tasco registered.

I "rescued" this scope from GW.  Got it for a good price, as it was pick-up only, and no one that knew about it wanted to make the drive.  It was very dirty, but it cleaned up very nicely.  60mm x 910  #261295

It has been one of my most used scopes.  I've even taken it to a couple outreach programs.

I compared the images to my Unitron 128, and it came out a tie.  IMO

That CD looks like the one on my Sears 6339a.  Hmm, maybe it will fit on my 7TE-2.

"I've wondered at times, if Tasco had stuck with RA as their fabricator, could they have possibly been seen as a serious competitor for the high-end Unitron scopes in the larger apertures?"

Ah, yes! Another jolt to the memory of my failed gag in a thread from a few years back, in which I reported my Tasco 7te-5 to be "my favorite Unitron!"

The consensus on this Forum has been that Unitron had the best mechanicals, but Royal Astro was more consistent in optical quality. Certainly, Royal Astro mechanicals were quite good enough. It would seem, then, that in leaving Royal Astro, Tasco indeed walked away from a chance to be seen as the consistent best. We may never know why they did this: a desire to sell more telescopes? lack of courage to be a top-dollar, niche manufacturer?

Speaking of courage, my 7te-5 is a winner, but its mount is sticky with old fish-grease that outright freezes in the winter. I need to clean that.

From another thread, BB said,

"Gary, that's interesting...  I don't have your scope Registered as a 7TE-2 -- just 7TE.  Are you referring to S/N  261295?  Does the scope and/or case label have the model number??"

I will go back and look at the thread I made after I purchased this scope.  I may be just a 7TE, but in the discussion of it, it was found that it is may be a 7TE -2.  It may have been something Stephen said, but until I look, I have to stop guessing.

Yes same s/n.  There was no box, but there was green felt stuck to the tube in two places, so it originally was in a wood box.

Edit:  Here is the thread on my 7TE-2

Interesting.  I've always considered the 7TE one of the most perfectly-proportioned setups, as far as a visual aesthetic.  Only a handful of other models share that visual balance.  It is a beautiful scope.  Also very usable.  I prefer using my 1000mm models with a hybrid diagonal, but use the Vixen adapter on the 910s.  And the tripod is nice and tall, you don't have to get on your knees to view something near the zenith.

Comparing the 7TE to the 60mm Unitron is interesting, I've used three of the Unitrons but all were alt-az, I hope to try a 128 soon.   So I'll hold my comments on that until after I've had a chance to put the Unitron equatorial mount through it's paces.

You are probably the one who got me thinking about it in the first place.

I remember reading that toward the end of the war, as their manufacturing & refining supply lines were cut, Japan was cutting down the native evergreen forests and making pine-based lubricants and solvents, and the pine-based grease was particularly sticky.  Wish I could remember where I read that, but it sure makes sense if true.  There could have been warehouses full of it after the war.

Tasco imported many different variations of what most folks call the 7TE model. Digging deep into the archives here on CN and with newer information that has surfaced here on CN, I have a better idea of when and what versions of the 7TE that Tasco imported thru the years. I keep searching, but have never run across any sales literature by Tasco to reflect what exactly or when exactly the various 7TE models were sold before 1960 or mid 1959.

But with that said, some pre 7TE 1960 Tascos have been found with instruction manuals, inspection tags or stickers and other sales literature to help better understand the time line for pre 1960 models. Along with that, it appears that Tasco imported 7TE scopes from the same source/vendor/manufacture that Astro Optical used and or contracted directly from Astro Optical. Before 1958 there appears to have been scopes from what is called the Astro Service Center in Japan going back to 1956 per Japan sources. This may have been pre Astro Optical Co. Inc. beginnings and or was actually early Astro Optical before if became officially Astro Optical Co. Inc. in 1958 per Japan sources in the archives here on CN.

To this date, the earliest known documented Tasco versions of a 7TE model were called Tasco 152 Power models. The name 7TE or even 7T was not used in the manuals until the 1959 time frame. Inspection tags date this first known version back to Sept 1957. But the Tasco 152 Power manuals are the same as used by Astro Optical but revised to reflect the Tasco imported version. Going back further, the Astro Optical manuals seem to arise from Astro Service Center imported scopes dating back to 1956 such as one brand imported by the name of Space Scope 151.

The serial numbers that have been found on pre 1959 Tasco 7TE models will be listed below as time permits. This is the best I can say at this time with known information again based on manuals, inspection tags/stickers, orig owner recollections first or second hand and comparing to Astro Optical or Astro Service Centers models offered during the same time period when applicable.

Numerical Range of Tasco Serial Numbers or REG NO's:

Tasco 228 Power Models with serial numbers ranging from 11XXX to 12XXX. Circa 1959 or possibly earlier?

These are the Tasco models that I can not yet honestly give a date range for many reasons. No inspection tags or export tags found with this version to help date them.  Also this version appears to be from a different source/suppler/vendor/manufacture than assumed Astro Optical 1958 on up imports. Plus they also don't fit Astro Service Center typical imported models going back to 1956. Tasco had patent number on these wooden storage boxes but I've not had any luck using that to date this serial number group. I'm not convinced that the presence of patent numbers by themselves means that this version was the very first 60mm x 910mm model imported by Tasco has opposed to a different suppler/importer that Tasco used.

If you've read earlier postings by me over the years, I've said these scopes seem to share many traits that the imported brand of Swift scopes beginning around 1960 which also have much in common with the Japan brand of Eikow. But the white plastic control rod handles with a U-Joint are pictured on Astro Optical models going back to possibly 1958 or 1959.

Who's on first...I do not know the true connection between all of these importers...but as many others have stated, it may all come down to the hundreds or more of small job or mom and pop shops that supplied parts to the major exporters in Japan.

Did Tasco use another importer at one time for a short period while also importing there Astro Optical version, that could be one explanation. Reason I mention this is that these Swift like early imported scopes are found on one version of a Space Scope model and also versions of SPI and Sans & Streiffe models. And these Swift like imported various brands match known early 1959 Sears catalog offerings and other mail order catalogs from same time frame of 1959. Could they be late 1958 scopes, could be but no literature to confirm at this time. So I leave the date at 1959 at this time for this version called the Tasco 228 Power Model.

For those not familiar with the Tasco 228 Power version, here are a few pics of this version as only a few have surfaced albeit on CN, Amart or GW per my searches over the last 6+ years. This version is unlike any other known Tasco 7TE except that it has the Tasco name. The beautiful example pictured is from another CN member of the set up scope. The other pics are from examples I own but stored away.

Tasco 152 Power Models with serial numbers ranging from 22XXX to 24XXX. Circa mid/late 1957 to 1958 range.

These scopes are the ones with the black textured finish used on the mounts/focuser etc with different versions of engraved objective cells and focuser name tags. Also the small wood accessory tray resting on one of the wooden legs referred lovingly as a "beverage holder".

The wooden box name tag reads:  TASCO 60mm TELESCOPE top line, 152X 73X 45X middle line and MADE IN JAPAN on bottom third line.

No flexible control rods used yet. The pinion knobs and RA/Dec slow motion control knobs are the gray phenolic type.

No Astro Optical mark stamped on focuser name tag.

The master manual used for the Tasco version of the manual is the same one used on many other Astro Optical imported scopes as mentioned earlier. The manual had blank areas to allow each imported brand to have their own specific model version manual printed up and reflect eyepieces/accessorizes used.

Here are a couple pics to reflect this version from a couple examples I own. Again no mention of model name of 7T or 7TE is used in the manual. There are many other examples of the different 152 Power versions here on CN for those interested. The pic of the wood accessory tray is from another CN member to show what that looks like complete with the beverage of your choice. smile.gif

Don't have any photos of it set up but here are a few in the box and interesting sales info from 62. I just bought what I think is the Monolux clone of the 7te. Will post some photos of that one when it gets in.

I have the same sales flyer from Tasco which is ©1961 introducing the new 1962 models. It came from an early 1962 12TE-2 with the 1961 12TE instruction sheet. Small world. The sales flyer is from Northwestern Hobby either from Seattle or Spokane location. Scope came for Des Moines, WA.

I bought as pristine complete package some time back, stored for decades in its original box and sold to me. I've only taken out the optical tube, everything else is still tucked away in its box.

I've only taken a few photos of it but it is amazing that this is my smallest aperture telescope I've ever owned and I'm constantly drawn to it to use it more and more. The quality of this entire package, down to the excellent machine work on every part of the optical tube, especially the immaculate lens cell, shows the level of quality and detail the Japanese put into these scopes back in the 1960's.

Next weeks new moon skies look very promising. I'm looking to use this as a piggy back / finder scope on my 4" F/15 next weekend so I can enjoy both scopes under dark skies.

This is the 7TE-5 on my CG-4.
