They do not have threaded on focusers.  Both finder bracket screws go thru the tube into the focuser housing.  On the other side is another screw.  Before I got my first one I  had thought the same thing.

My 1965 #814 (APL) has a thread on focuser; also same box layout w/ wooden inserts, no styrofoam.
