You are, of course, very correct. :-)
It would more accurately be Gen9, but that doesn't sound like good marketing. Further, it would just result in confusion because historical documentation of the past models is sadly lacking. The part numbers never changed over the years. Everybody would want to know what generation their 1981 filter was. I have no idea. So there you have it. Maybe we should have gone with "Special Edition" or "Diamond Series" or something like that. Sounds a little too Madison Avenue to me, though.
Our Gen3 moniker was chosen to differentiate the new model, acknowledge past variants, and (at the same time) limit confusion. The Gen3 will say "Gen3" on the filter cell, but it will retain the old part numbers (LF3040 for the 1.25" and LF3045 for the 2").
Obviously there were many models before we acquired Lumicon. We lump them together as Gen1a-g but they never had a historical differentiating model number, so call them what you wish. There is the model that OSI put out after we acquired Lumicon, we are calling that the "Classic". The Classic is exactly the same as the last model that Lumicon put out before OSI acquired Lumicon. Yes,"Gen2" would been more logical but we had already picked the Classic name before we created the Gen3 name. We are selling off the "Classic Edition" (our previous model) at a huge 50% discount just to clear things out and start fresh. So going forward, there will only be the Gen3. Again, it will say Gen3 on the filter cell but the part numbers will be the same as they always have been.
Is the Gen3 an improvement over Classic Edition? Yes it is. It the Gen3 THAT much better (50% better) than the Classic Edition? No...of course not. The Classic Edition is still a very nice filter; far ahead of the inexpensive alternatives that are out there. At $50 for a 1.25" Classic OIII (LF3040-C) it is a screaming bargain. Sorry, no 2" Classic OIII's, they are already gone. We do, however, have the 2" Econoline OIII (LF3045E) for only $50. Not as good as the Classic, but still better than most competitors and absolutely unchallenged at that price.
I know people are waiting for scans, charts, numbers, and analysis...that is coming. We are just really swamped here at the moment and we want to put out only quality information.
