So I just looked at my Jupiter App to see what's going on with Jupiter and it's four moons and there appears to be a 5th one in the bunch. At one point tonight the chart shows 4 bunched up on one side and Io on the other side of the planet. The extra one in the field is labeled HD129957. Is this just a bright star or something else? At one point, it's right on top of Ganymede. Hope it's clear enough to see this grouping tonight, looks like fun!

That's a star.  Jupiter only has 4 moons visible to amateur scopes.  Regardless, it should be pretty cool to see.

I was looking at Jupiter last night and saw the star with the group of 4 moons. It looked really cool because it was a very similar brightness to the moons. I even called my wife over to take a look. She said "1,2,3,4,5???" I laughed because I knew how she would react. Definitely worth a look.

I looked it up and it is a 8mag. star in Bootes. Too bad it was cloudy out, would have liked to have seen it. Glad someone did.

Check your source again. HD 129957 and Jupiter are in Libra...not Bootes.

I noticed that star the other night, too. It certainly WAS confusing!

BTW, just looked again today and that star is still in the moon mix. Also, Europa will transit the top of the planet tonight at 22:45 EST. So four moons to the left of the planet and the 5th star to the right. Again, rain for us tonight.frown.gif
