I want to choose a new pair of EPs for my soon-to-arrive Denk II w/2"OCS. For a while I have been assuming that I would be well advised to get a medium power pair of eyepieces, somewhere around 15-17mm in fl. I spent much time and mental energy trying to determine which brand of 15-17mm EP I would get. I haven't, however, given much thought to which fl would be best for my telescope.

Questions like optimum exit pupil size, appropriate power for the objects that I enjoy observing, et... have not been at the forefront of my mind; and perhaps these should be.

What would you folks advise, based upon the following:

I have a 17.5" f/4.5 dob

I enjoy deep sky observing (mostly diffuse nebula, galaxies) and also, of course, the planets.

I currently I have a pair of Panoptic 24mm for low power/wide field viewing.

I also have a pair of KK ortho 12.5mm EPs

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Clear skies!

-Chris M :)

Hi Chris,
I do have the set of Siebert's Ultra plus 16mm ep's (65 AFOV) and has 20mm eye relief.
I used this set with my SM 11" f/4.3 Shorty, and I am very happy with this set. This set works best for the moon and the planets, rather than the other sets of ep's, that I have here.
I tried that with my other scope Tectron 20" F/5 recenty, and it will not come to focus.
I need work on this scope and hopefully I can use it soon, to test this set of ep's.
Hope that will help? :praying:

Hi Chris,
An alternative approach to another set of eyepieces and the costs associated with buying them would be to barlow your existing eyepieces. The Siebert 1.8OCA would work great as a barlow with your 24mm Panoptics and the resulting 150x
would put you right in the territory of the 15mm Panoptics
without the expense.150x worked very well for me in my 15in Dob on galaxies in the Mag 12 to Mag 14 range. You should be able to go deeper with your larger aperture.Good luck with your decision. Scotty :)
