I put out the feelers for a Meade 390 or 395 OTA a couple of months ago that paid off.  I have an older 395 90mm x1000mm on its way. I plan on setting it up to run at an effective aperture of 82mm at F30 and 72mm at F35 as a solar H-alpha unit on my dual drive Meade LX70 GEM.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 395.  These $100 Scopes are dangerous to down-sizing!  Too many of mine become Keepers:  Stubby, the 826, the C102, and the Meade 390... Yikes!

Of the many sizes of scopes the 90/1000 is sort of a Goldilocks.

But how do you triple the focal length?

The ERFs brings the aperture down to 82mm and 72mm respectively. The telecentric increases the f.l. from 1000 to 2500. 2500/82 = F30, 2500/72 = F35.

I'm really liking this combo:

Meade 390 S24 - Cradle (Mizar SP LS CUl).jpg

BIG Question:  Have we nailed down which company in Taiwan made these scopes for Meade?   I saw some mention of an "LSO" that may have been the parent for GSO, but nothing definite.  I want to start adding these to The Registry, but want good data...

Thanks Y'all!!

As for the OP:  Are they worth upgrading?  IMO, modest upgrades that > performance, ease of use, etc. -- yes.

Often wondered this myself, Meade refractors aren't very common in the UK,

when they do show up they hold a good price but i've steered clear due to experience of some poor quality Taiwanese products.

I may have an answer:  I noticed that the Bushnell Banner 400 Series have both Made In ROC plus a (K) on the labels.  After digging, I found a Taiwanese company, Kinko, was an optics maker beginning in the early 1980s...  So, I wonder if Kenko (Japan) stood up Kinko (ROC) and/or had a business relationship with this company?  When Meade switched from TOWA to MIZAR (both Japanese) to these 300 Series, there were already ROC-based scope makers to take up production -- some ROC company initially just copied the Towa EQ-1 & EQ-2 mounts.  I also noticed that the Banner 400s have identical hardware to the MIZAR (Japan) Banner 1000s & Pentax J Series...
