For the last three years, this forum has had a Monthly Observing Challenge that I am sure you are all familiar with, and which by all accounts has been very popular. These threads have been overwhelmingly driven by the efforts of the members here, and I thank everyone who has taken on a month, as well as everyone who has participated in the threads.

While the bulk of the effort has certainly come from the members, there has also been a demand placed on the Moderating Team in two regards; first, the trivial effort of pinning and unpinning threads as the months change, and second, the more significant task of organizing volunteers and seeking out replacements as conflicts arise.

These tasks actually lie outside of the scope of the volunteer Moderators' role as "custodians" of the forum, a role which consumes a fair amount of time in and of itself. So after discussion, we have decided that beginning with the 2019 series of challenges, the organization of the Monthly Challenge Volunteers should be taken over by you, the members. This will recenter the EAA Moderating Team on its core function, and will invest the members here even more greatly in the success of this enjoyable series.

So, with that background being provided, my next post will outline the rules and our guidance for the series moving forward. It is essentially unchanged in all respects other than the role of the Moderators.

Monthly EAA Observing Challenges: Each month the Monthly Challenge Volunteer will suggest a seasonal variety of deep sky and solar system observing targets, preferably of varying degrees of difficulty to encourage the participation of both beginning and advanced users

1. During the month of November of each year, any interested member should initiate a thread requesting volunteers for the upcoming year, one volunteer per month. (A single thread only - multiple threads will be merged.) Volunteers should indicate which month(s) they would like to take or when are available. Once volunteers have been assigned to each month, a wrap-up post in the thread is strongly encouraged, listing the volunteers by month, as well as the volunteers willing to step up in the event someone develops a conflict for their assigned month. This recruitment thread is a team effort, and anyone who is interested in the series should contribute to help organize the effort.

2. Once the Monthly Challenge Volunteer creates the thread for that month, he/she will either PM the Moderating Team or initiate "Notify Moderator" on the initial post in the thread, letting the moderators know that it is ready to be pinned. The moderators will pin the thread and also unpin the previous month's thread.

3. Monthly Challenge Volunteers should alert the forum as soon as possible in the event a conflict arises for their assigned month, so that the members have ample time to recruit a replacement for that month.

4. All posts must be compliant with both the Cloudy Nights TOS and the EAA Forum Rules, especially the image guidelines. Adding annotations to the posted captures is not considered post processing and is allowed.

5. NV users may, according to their preference, post afocal captures, textual descriptions of the targets, or both.

6. Members are welcome to post objects other than those selected by the Monthly Challenge Volunteer.
