Does anyone run ASIAIR with a Vixen mount?

Vixen mounts are not officially supported by ASIAIR, but ZWO writes that ASIAIR would run with any mount?

Hey Nikguy,

Did you ever find an answer to this?

Vixen mounts are not supported by ASIAIR or other similar products like Ekos Live (based on INDI, see: https://indilib.org/...lescopes.html)!

Interesting Ken!

ASIAir and INDI looks like the same, but its not the same.

I dont know if it possible to run INDI under Android or Windows?

As far as I know ASIAir uses INDI drivers. From https://astronomy-im...duct/zwo-asiair "ASIAIR control the mount through INDI"

But the Starbook driver is very new so maybe not included with ASIAir (maybe worth asking ZWO directly)

INDI runs only on Linux  and there is an OSX version available through a third party. However INDI is designed for distributed computing and whilst the drivers need to run on Linux, the client software can run on any platform. ASIAir is actually a bundle of INDI and proprietary drivers on a Raspberry Pi3 and an IOS client. There are other clients available. Kstars/Ekos is a planetarium and astrophotography tool that runs on Windows, Linux and OSX. CdC and Stellarium also have INDI interfaces as does PHD2.  Then there is Ekos Live which runs in a web browser and therefore can run on essentially any platform.

As an alternative to the ASIAir RPi server you can instead build your own or purchase StellarMate. The advantage of that is that you have access to all the drivers including those for cameras other than ZWO. And in my case I use an alternative computer which provides USB3 ports and eMMC storage and other useful features.

I think what many people fail to realise is that the main value-add component of ASIAir is the IOS client software. If you aren't interested in using that then the other INDI options could be a better choice.

To add to this, I just noticed this very recent comment on the ASIAIR on ZWO's site:

yoshi – January 8, 2019:

Will it support vixen starbook TEN?
According to the INDI HP(https://indilib.org/...pes/vixen.html)
It announced that INDI vixen starbook driver is released as a 3rd party driver.

Katherine Tsai – January 8, 2019:

Theoretically, ASIAIR could support this mount, but we have not test it.

_____________
So it's just a big maybe at this point. Still researching.

Further Update:

ASIAIR based on INDI (see posting above) and since last update of INDI-Library it supports VIXEN-Mounts over starkbook.

In INDI-Forum report a user, that INDI runs with a SXD2 Mount.

He reports also of some problems with the slew speed setting...but the developer of the driver ensures an update to solve this problem.

Hopefully not considered as necroposting, however has there been any updates in this? Aside from a user on the INDI-Forum, are there more users who’ve comfortably run their ASIAir (and hopefully the newer ASIAir Pro) with a Vixen Starbook-based mount?

I’m also curious about any updates to this thread - just bought a Sphinx SXD2 and looking at buying a used ASIair...

The SXD2 uses a Starbook Ten? Then no worries, the ASIAir works with it (mostly). Currently I run a crossover cable from the ASIAir Pro UTP hub into the Starbook Ten, and I've just bought a RAVPower AC750 (RP-WD009) to be used as an access point to see if I can control it wirelessly - one less cable running from the top of the OTA down to the controller.

The reason why I mentioned the ASIAir Pro works mostly was I had guiding lose track and stop guiding and noticed the ASIAir Pro stopped recognising the Starbook Ten midway through my imaging session. I had to reboot the ASIAir Pro, reconfigure my subs, and resumed my session. Not certain why it did that, so I'll have to test some more.

If your on the current asiair app/firmware release, I’m encountering some new bugs I’ve never seen before. I wonder if your problem does not pertain to the Star Book but is a recent new bug. Just a thought...

Current the SXD2 is high on my list for new mount soon, along w/ Losmandy. I’m not worrying about AsiAir capability. I had a bug last year and Zwo fixed it with days and gave me a beta upgrade. You should write them..

On my current Asiair build I see the Star Book Ten in the mount pull-down list....

I am running a beta Asiair and had not looked at this issue before

I forget... someone here at CN has mentioned a AsiAir Facebook group that supposedly developers attend. I left a recent post at the zwo forum and never got a reply. Maybe FB is the way to go.

Katherine answers emails but she is not highly technical like a developer. She will put people in touch with developers is directly asked. They may be a bit slower to respond.

Their working at home i think

FB? Could be. I don’t have a FB account.

Bugs: I don;t have a vixen yet; thinking about that now. AsiAir controls my iOptron hand controller as best as iOptron can work
AsiAir bugs: Hanging the app as I stop image capture that is previewing continuously. Popping up messages that I’m not reusing a previous saved calibration cuz I have it off. Their message accepts OK, but not cancel (dumb message). Other small stuff I can’t think of. Tonight it was terrible interrupting everything with messages about a guide camera disconnected. Replaced core, even the camera; tried different ports - still constantly complained interrupting everything. Constantly needed to reconnect due to the messages; never did that before. Wanted reboots for guider to restart; that’s new. Totally flacky - it’s always been absolutely rock solid. I suppose the box could have a problem

I’ve actually got a question about polar alignment routine in the ASIAir Pro with the Vixen mount.

Does the scope have to be oriented to point to the NCP or SCP? The standard parked OTA on the Vixen mount is at Dec 0 deg.
