Not letting it time out to dark screen has kept from happening for a while now. Thanks for the sugestión that few do that so I focused on that. I have a new audiostar hbx with a very old 'scope- the one whose hbx predates asking about magnetic or true north in setup. I'm guessing that the hbx is sending a new message when it goes into power saying that the 'scope doesn't understand and interprets as slewing commands.

Nope, as if so, hundreds of people would have reported it by now.
Re True or magnetic North, that has nothing to do with the mount
merely the firmware version you have loaded.
