the ad says the  AP 130mm is the ultimate grab and go........

Interesting to the inexperienced  ( me )      the 6'' is 2k less than the 130mm      there must be a reason for this   that is straight forward to you folks but I am clueless

I am not to embarrassed to ask what is probably a dumb question   is it because one is  a triplet? Is it because one was rare custom made highly sought after  only a few made?

Thanks

B

Grab and go. This beautiful but weighty classic is much more of a heft and groan!

Edmund 6" mirror kit... sold this to this guy about 6 months ago and it's kind of heartbreaking to see nothing has become of it.

He probably lost his courage! :(

Reminds me of the time I was bringing door prizes for our astronomy club. I announced that we had an Ethos to give away.

I barely survived when I revealed the actual prize:

The six-inch is an earlier scope, a doublet. The 130mm is an oil-spaced triplet. Color correction in the triplet is superb, and very much in demand.

The earlier 6" AP is a triplet, but does not have ED glass.  The 130mm is also a triplet, but with ED glass.

Hi all, I just came across a couple of classic telescopes for sale for those in Southern California:

76mm x 1200mm Mayflower at Southern California for Pickup Only,

Just OTA, eyepieces, and wood box (very tempting to purchase  after just getting a 60mm Mayflower that I've been enjoying.); no mount; very beat up perhaps; bidding starts at $10

https://www.shopgood...m/Item/59843674

And a Cave Astrola reflecting telescope currently at $135 in Redlands via Facebook Marketplace:

Who made that Mayflower?

Who made that Mayflower?

No maker's mark that I can see, but based on the serial number, focuser, & finder bracket... (Royal) Astro Optical.

Looks like the Royal Astro Optical version.

It's Aug. 1979 manufacture date.  The code is in the serial number.

It's a good scope, easy to use. While it is in the configuration shown in the photo, place the tripod so it is facing North - roughly.

Plug it in, and if the motors are working then it will track objects as they move across the sky. It moves so slow you won't be able to see it. It moves twice a slow as the hour hand of a clock.

You have to have an eyepiece which I don't see in the pictures, and a diagonal is almost ALWAYS a good idea with this type scope.

It's a fairly simple scope. People in this forum will be happy to get you lined up if you ask questions.

I have an 80mm Mayflower that is Very similar.  What are you looking for?  pm me to keep this string clear of the inevitable some others won't.

Some one got the Mayflower package for about $15 tax and all, out the door, plus travel. Sorry Russ but it would be hard to sell a single screw for that.
