Greetings all.  A while back I had asked questions on here regarding aurora, aurora chasing, Iceland weather and other Iceland travel related questions.  It's taken a while, but I have finally finished editing all of my Iceland photos, and the Aurora photos I took.

The trip was an amazing success.  I saw the lights on the flight over, which was very cool.  We arrived just as a stream from a large coronal hole hit sparking Kp5 storms that very night.  We were in Gullfoss where the sky lit up brilliantly before clouding over.  On the South side of the Island, I heard that it was clear all night.  You never know what you'll get in Iceland.

The next night in Kirjufell, I spent a few hours shooting the mountain.  The aurora was visible and present, but not like the night before.  That is, until I got back to my air BnB a little North of Kirkjufell, where the sky erupted in one of the most awesome displays imaginable.  It was the last night of good display.  I saw the lights again, but later in the week they would be obscured mostly by clouds.

The Northern lights have tainted me.  I once thought the Milky Way from a dark sky site, such as the one at Spruce Knob, WV, that I go to yearly was the most amazing thing.  Aurora is by far the most amazing visual experience I have ever had, and it has left me thirsty for more.  I learned so much shooting while I was there, I want another go at it, and another.

At any rate, I'm rambling.  Here are the photos:   https://flic.kr/s/aHsmrWafuS

Those are the best I have ever seen.  You should be able to sell them or you could make a calendar or mouse pads or even just sell the photos..  Amazing images.

Wonderful photos.

Kelly and I went to Iceland five year ago for an 11 day vacation and I think it was the best vacation we ever took.  We loved Iceland.    It was summer though, and we did not see any aurora.

Fantastic for you.  I hope you enjoyed your trip to Iceland as much as we enjoyed ours!

And with waterfalls in the foreground.  Nice job!

Folks often ask about our favorite visual spectacles.  I'm right with you.  My top three, in order, are the naked-eye Milky Way with Sagittarius overhead from a Southern Hemisphere site, Northern Lights from a polar region, and then a total solar eclipse in third place.

I was in Iceland last September, and we went through 10 nights before they flared up under a clear sky.  The most striking things were the rate at which they moved across the sky, and the variety of their forms.

Fantastic pictures!!!!  , and I'm sure they don't do justice to it being there experience it "live"   This trip has been on my list for quite some time...

And it looks weird to see the big dipper so high in the sky in that position....

Thank you for sharing your stunning images and impressions. And what an impression.

I like the shot with the waterfalls in the foreground. It’s a challenge to look anywhere in Iceland and not see water tumbling from a precipice somewhere!

My sister is flying to Reykjavik in early January with her best friend to celebrate her friend’s 50th birthday. They’re only going to be there 4 days. I forwarded the link to your write up and photographs to her. I really hope that they will be able to share the experience.

Wow, solar eclipse is third?!?! I drove up to TN for the eclipse last year and that was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Hmmmm... (checks flier miles... whistfully sighs)

Awesome shots, OP. I remember your post discussing the upcoming trip! Glad it went well and thanks for sharing!

Amazing photos!  Very beautiful, indeed.  It's been quite a few years since there have been good displays of the lights here; but I certainly loved seeing them; and hope they return soon!

Thanks for sharing!

Stunning subjects and stunning work!

We're this close thewave.gif   to booking a trip there in late September, 8 days 7 nights. Any suggestions on where to stay? Or suggestions in general?

I would definitely stay at hotel Gullfoss.  You are a mile from the falls and near Geysir.  Its in the Golden Circle and the hotel wakes you if the aurora come out.  Not to mention the hotel restaurant is AMAZING.

Outside of that, we went to many of the usual tourist spots.  Kirkjufell made a nice background and was quite beautiful.

Hello !  Just joined the forum.  I was wondering if you could see the aurora colors ( green & purple ) with your unaided eyes ?  Or did the aurora just look like white light, and the colors were only seen by your camera ?

I've been on trips hoping to see the colors several times -- in Alaska, the Yukon, Norway.  Never any luck, except for my photos, of course.  So I'm wondering if there are places where the light is more intense, including maybe Iceland ?

Really?  I have the first, but thought the other two would outrank it!
