Excellent. I'm sure the old scope is quite happy.

Nice job, Paul!

I'm picking up a 70's version of this scope (red tube/beige mount) on Saturday. I won it on ebay, though the seller (a second party) was not able to provide me with information that would leave me feeling confident. Hopefully it will be fully functional.

From what I can tell, the one that I have has extremely similar hardware (not like the later, sleeker versions), though it has only a single counterweight. Unfortunately for me, mine doesn't come with a drive, though I'm hoping that through some sort of Astromart magic, I'll be able to put one on it later.

It appears that my scope has manuals with it. If you'd like some scans or copies of them, let me know. - j

Ah, I figured that was the one you were asking about earlier, Jay. It also looks to be a great scope. Nothing wrong with one without a clock. I'm building my old 6" f8 Meade dob a pipe-mount equatorial pier.

Have you noticed that the system for holding the tubes on the mounts seems like an afterthought? Were these originally held on by plastic straps that went though the holes in the cast cradle? I think I've seen a set-up like this, where the straps went though a type of buckle.

The holes drilled for my finder brackets are not even in line (neither perpendicular to the tube for each ring, nor parallel for the set)!

Have you found both counter-weights to be necessary? Mine's fine with a single one..

How 'bout a first-light report?

Hello Jay,
My tube was origionaly bolted to the mount with 2 bolt going directly thru the tube into the mount. The plastic tube rings were an optional purchase
I have the paperwork that came with the kit. I will scan it for you if you want it.
My finder is the same way.
I have not had a chance to get the scope out since I fixed it up. I took it out the first night I had it. I thought it's optics were very good. By the way I need both counterweights to balance the scope isn't that weird.

Here's a picture I took in 1958 of 3 Edmund Palomar Juniors and a 6-inch Treckerscope. Mine is the Palomar Jr. in the foreground. Location: Antelope Valley, California.

Mac,

Many thanks for posting this Edmund ad! As I metioned in another thread, this is the scope I bought back in the Spring of 1967 (the ad looks the same as the '67 version; IIRC the price was the same). It sure is great to see it again. :)
