Have you tried all the solvents on the Galactic Swirl?

I start with water and then move on to solvents.

Solvents are in 2 groups, petroleum and alcohol, if I remember correctly.

I start with the alcohol family and then the petroleums.

I have not experimented with citrus, and these can be very strong. After

hearing about lens coating damage from citrus I stopped buying any soaps or

cleaners with citrus but it may be worth a try if the lens is uncoated.

New case lid is now glued and screwed to framework . Had to make a template from wax paper to match  the holes  in the frame to the holes in the case lid plywood skin . After glued and screwed , I put a pass of masking tape to protect the original finish then trimmed the  the excess from the luann with a router flush cut bit after the plywood was put in place . I have to do the bottom of the case next .

I'm really liking this new brand of Luann plywood .. The grain is just about Spot On to the original . I think  it will look fine once I color match the wood stain .

I lightly sanded the interior of the case today to give a brighter natural unfinished wood finish just to remove dirty stains . Also went to Benjamin Moore paint store for Old Masters Oil wood stain . I Might have to mix two colors to get the desired tone ......Cedar , and Red Mahogany . I will finish sand a test strip of the Luann plywood and preform numerous test stainings     prior to final application on the lid and bottom exteriors . I plan to glue the bottom skin on the case tomorrow . Dry overnight then router trim , sand , and replace  metal brads in bottom to match as per OEM . Then replace all WHITE felt trim in the case to match original specs.

Tom,  I presume your stain testing will be based on percentage variations of each of the two stains.  This stain you mention has a sealer and will have a slightly glossy finish or will you add something after staining to provide the original level of sheen?

Thanks for sharing all of this!

I had to rebuild one of my Goto  legs, searched and found the correct grain Philippine Mahogany and

Varathane oil base Colonial Maple was a good match.

Yes Stew ....IF.... I have to mix ..... It will be done on percentages  . The stain is solely just a oil based wood stain , unlike a Minwax finish that combines stain and sealer / finish ie. One step finish . The final semigloss satin finish will be Deft satin urethane brushed to the lid and bottom skins only after stain is thoroughly dried . Maybe 1-3 coats depending ...Then rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and Johnson's paste wax .

Those legs look fantastic Robert ..... Yes I already have some " Colonial Maple " stain that I will be adding to the test strip . The case  lid and bottom , unlike your legs Robert , has a varnish like top finish to give a sort of sheen .

Do you rub it out with the wax IN the steel wool?

As I thought this is going to be next to impossible to try to show , but here we go .

The first image is of three different stains only . All straight out of the can on sanded Luann , no top satin   top coat .

From left to right ........Old Masters - Cedar , Valspar - Pecan , Pratt and Lambert - custom mix that my Father used to stain woodwork thru-out the home .

The second image is of the test strip of Luann with all test .

The next  images are of mixes with a flash and one without the flash .

I used the Old Master , Cedar as my base stain . FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ......1st. Old Master , Cedar and the Pratt + Lambert ,custom mixed to a 50/50 mix ........  THEN  2nd., OM ,Cedar and Valspar , Pecan @ 50/50 mix.....  THEN 3rd , equal parts of all three OM , PL , Val .......THEN 4th. , The best in my Real Time Light ( In my opinion ) Two parts OM , Cedar to one part Pratt+Lambert , Custom .

Will let the stain dry overnight then apply Deft satin clear coat to half of all the test stainings . To check for darkening after application . I also have some Varnish satin I will test too .

The last two aren't even close but had to try .lol.gif

Both top and bottom are now in stain . They must dry / cure overnight . Tomorrow I will apply 2-3 coats of amber shellac thinned to a 50/50 mix of shellac and denatured alcohol with 30min . between coats . This will seal the wood and stain so the final top coat of Deft satin clear will not be sucked up by the open wood pores . After the shellac sealer is dry overnight it will be hand rubbed with 0000 steel wool , Tacked with a tack rag , then the Deft will be applied . Maybe 2-3 coats of Deft or till a match is achieved . IN THE MEANTIME , while I watch paint dry lol.gif  . I will read and  recommend this book ,  Lots O Good tips and techniques . Still available on the Zon .waytogo.gif
