Can someone recommend a good grease to use for the gear on my Meade LX200 8" scope.

It doesn't get much use and last night when I had it out there was a little noise coming from the Dec Vertical drive fork.

Any assistance would great be appreciated.

Nick

This previous Cloudy Nights Forum topic  https://www.cloudyni...grease-for-gem/  recommends Superlube synthetic grease.   ubetcha.gif

A friend of mine uses this grease on all his paramounts and I now use it on my Celestron and Ioptron Mounts.

I use Mobile One synthetic grease in my mounts.  It's a little viscous for this application, but I haven't had any problems.  Super Lube or Lubriplate 105 might be better, I haven't tried either product.  What I don't use anymore is white lithium grease.  It's too light and it separates in the heat.

I cannot find any information on Mobil 1's website, stating that Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease is appropriate for Worm Gear applications.

Can you provide this information?

All I see is  ...

a) Roller Bearings

b) Automotive Steering

c) Automotive Chassis Lubrication

nothing regarding Worm Gears.

Grease that is appropriate for Worm Gear applications, has very specific specifications.

Do you have any proof that Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease shows less wear and tear than Lubriplate #105 Grease?

Mobil 1 Synthetic Aviation Grease #28 does state: Designed for Worm Gears, but is not used by any mount vendor.

I believe Astro-Physics mounts used, and may still use ... AeroShell Synthetic Aviation Grease 64

formerly known as AeroShell 33MS.

The mount vendors have many hours invested in testing and research.

They have picked the best greases for us to use on our Worm Gears.

You may also want to check the gap between the gears.  Improper play between the worm and main gear could also cause noise.

The gear material will probably be more important than the gear type.  You want the grease to stick to the metal so it would need to work with brass or aluminum or steel, depending on the metal used in the gears.

When I rebuilt my LX200GPS 12, I used the grease that came with my Petersen Engineering parts.

It has worked perfectly. You would have to contact them to see if you could get it from them.

Super Lube is carried at a lot of Ace Hardware stores in the US.

I use Lubriplate 130-A. It and the 105 grease would be good choices. Here are the material data sheets for both:

Does anyone know if the Lubriplate grease is sticky?

Thank you all for the information, I chose to go with the Super Lube and it took care of the issue.

Best Regards,

Nick
