Hats off to Makennah Bristow, a student at UNC-Asheville, a member of the astronomy Club of Asheville, and a previous club $1,000 scholarship recipient!!! Working as a NASA intern, she had a hand in the recent discovery of an exoplanet in the habitable zone of K2-288, a star located 226 light years away in Taurus!
Our club ( http://www.astroasheville.org ) has partnered with the university's Physics Department in building, equipping, and running Lookout Observatory ( https://lookoutobservatory.unca.edu/ ) where astronomy education, research, and public outreach take place. Courtesy of a generous bequest, we are able to award two $1,000 scholarships per academic year to UNC-Asheville students. Ms. Bristow was one of the recipients in 2017/2018. She is also a docent at the observatory.
