Hey all,

I think I've narrowed down my search for a dso photo shooter/eaa fun device. :)  I had come to a conclusion that the new WO GT81 was the target but then I happened to click on the William's Specials page and saw they had the GT71 for $598 vs the GT81 for $1188.  I'm curious from those that have used either of these, any thoughts?  Since I've not owned a scope in this size range I'm also not sure how much of a difference there will be for taking photos of dsos/eaa use.  For the price difference I could nab the GT71 and pick up a few of the add-ons below before even coming equal to the cost of the GT81 alone, so it made me pause a moment.

--GT81

--GT71 on sale

Also regardless of which, I would add a few items just in case it helps with the above discussion here is the targeted list:

--ASI294 pro

--The appropriate flattener/reducer

-- And in the near future most likely the new WO 50mm guidescope

--tbd asi guide cam (probably the 120mm that comes in the asi air package)

--ASI air

I already have an AVX mount as well.

Thanks for any thoughts!

80mm but sorry no pictures of 70mm at this time. The newer 50mm guide scopes are cool :)

Thanks for the feedback!  The half price piece is what really made me pause.. Seems like a pretty good deal without giving up too much overall. Good to hear from someone that's used both (Even if older).  The whole WO kit seems pretty well put together which is part of what interested me in the first place.

That's once nice looking scope you've got there too!

I've been eyeballing that GT71 it's a great scope at a nice price. Unfortunately it's the same FL as my WO  GTF 81mm five element, so I'm passing on it.  I've suggested it to a number of people in post here. I bought my GTF from them as a star party demo and it looked absolutely new and came with the same warranty as new.

I'd buy it if I was in the market and after equipping it... sell the AVX and use the saved bucks to upgrade to a better mount.

But that's just me...

Picture?...yes, here...

I'm drooling over that pic haha.  very nice!!  Yeah can totally understand if you already have the gt81.  Since I'm starting fresh it's sounding like the gt71 is just a pretty darn good deal.

I bought the same GT71 from WO over a year ago when they were having that same Demo markdown.  The scope arrived in perfect condition and has been a great grab and go scope along with a steep learning curve in Astrophotography.  Definitely a great price for a great FPL-53 APO...…..my 2 cents.

Well to follow-up, I just nabbed the GT71 and the WO 50mm guide scope.  Sounds like some good experiences with ithe GT 71 from lots of folks!  Looks like it has to ship to the US from international so a little wait  but we're getting rain all weekend and into next week anyway so no star fun for a bit. :\

Thanks for the feedback everyone, really excited about this one!

Should be a great deal. The only thing you'd give up is about 58mm of focal length and 0.3" of aperture, and a slightly lower limiting magnitude. For half the price I'd say it's worth it. Either way, you'll have a WO scope to wow yourself with.

Great buy. Keep us updated WO is good about their shipping. I still have the shipping box from mine stored away just in case I need it someday.
