It seems Vixen has made this available again according to their website, saying “it’s back” with 3 in stock. Looks to be unchanged and yes, it’s marked at 65 degrees.

Just ordered one.  The Mr. Star Guy website now says that two are left.  I have the LVW 3.5, 5, 8, 13, 17 and 22.  Wonderful eyepieces.  Used the 22 and 17 for the eclipse on Sunday night in my AstroTech 111 triplet.  Great performance!

Vixen's Japanese site has the 42s as current, along with the 30 NLVW & 50 NLV.

The 42 is a great eyepiece.

Not seeing the 42 LVW anywhere else (checked Eyepieces, ETC., and Agena Astro) other than at Mr. Star Guy, (who I believe is basically Vixen USA.) where there were 3 reported in stock yesterday, and currently 2 reported in stock (after I placed my order).  My suspicion is that some "new/old stock" was found somewhere and that is what is now being sold.  The price is actually very good compared to the price quoted in some old threads here on CloudyNights.  I would grab while the grabbing is good.

Interesting.....the 5 Amazon sellers have the Vixen LVW priced at anywhere from $387.35 up to a high of $500.00, and at the VixenUSA (Mr. Star Guy) site, the price is $299.00.  Mine has shipped with arrival scheduled for next Tuesday.

Interesting, what about shipping costs?  The post under yours about "Japan Store" on eBay has a minimum shipping cost of $16.00 with delivery in 3 to 4 weeks.

I bought one direct from Japan when they went on close out sale a couple years ago. I had to buy two lenses to meet the minimum price for an international order. So I got the 42 and a 22. The 42 set me back $180 and the 22 about $120, and there was about $30 in international shipping and fees. Delivery did take three weeks or so. So I sold the 22 for $150 which covered the cost of the 22 and the fees, and left me with the 42 for the $180. At those prices I probably could have bought the full set of 1.25” ones and sold all of them for profit to pay for the 42. But it seemed like a bit of hassle and $180 was already a great price.

That includes the shipping to California. Took a couple of weeks from memory.

Yes, and it is one of a couple I don’t have. Maybe if I tried it out first I wouldn’t have sold it. But that’s exactly why I didn’t try it out first. I figured the 22 would be easiest to sell. I have an ES 24mm 82 that fills that range for me. Not quite lvw sharp but still excellent, and considerably wider FOV. Which is important for a low power finder eyepiece.

I did convince a buddy to buy a 22lvw recently so now I can live vicariously through him when we stargaze.

Absolutely. A premium, light weight 40mm SWA. No 41 Pan or 40mm ES hand grenade. Sure the Pentax 40XW is light too, and supposedly better. But wow it is expensive. Multiple times what I paid for my 42lvw.

Ah so just clearing out some old stock, not really a comeback. Thanks for filling us in. Too bad, first the Pentax XW 40, now the 42LVW. No more premium light weight 40mm SWA it seems.

Buy from Amazon Japan or ebay. A UK dealer has some https://www.firstlig...-eyepieces.html

Got mine about a week ago.  Have not used yet.  When I ordered the inventory on hand counter was at 2.  My theory was that it was discovered “old stock” but I could be wrong. For many years I would call Unitron for this part or that part after they were no longer carrying the classic Unitron scopes. Sometime they would “find” what I was hunting for.

Most likely Vixen accepted unsold old stock back from dealers in Japan and liquidated it.  Probably as part of a deal to get the dealers to carry new Vixen offerings or provide better store placement, etc., for Vixen gear.

My favorite LVW is the 8mm followed by the 22mm.  The 3.5mm is "okay" and the 42mm is pretty good.  Especially if you get it on sale.

Best,

Jim

Owning the whole range, I regard 22 as best, then 17 & 13 equal, 8 & 5 equal. Hardly use the 3.5.

I used to have pairs of 8 & 13 for binoviewing, but now only use 22s in the TS b.v.

If that was the case why would a Japanese made eyepiece originally shipped to Japanese dealers have english  labeling on the barrel?

 Let's see....hope they respond

As u have said befor , they are relatively available on eBay/JP ..amazon.. & the European markets

I was kinda surprised to see how many were out there. A good amount
