Rare Tasco camera adapter

https://www.ebay.com...5oAAOSwdrdcNrM-

It uses the exact same hardware as my Mizar version, which is larger, and lets you position the camera in more ways.  But... it's HEAVY, and threw the balance of my 6336 way off.  This Tasco unit is limited, but lighter, and probably easier to use.

I agree that it's rare -- can't recall seeing another one like it on eBay.  And it has the documentation -- BONUS!

I have the model 1601-N, which is slightly different.  Mine has the box & instructions.  I'm sure I've posted it here before, but here it is again.  Camera adapter 002.jpg

These do work, but any time you hang a 35mm camera on a small refractor, say 4 inches or less, there's some serious center-of-mass shifting and balance is going to be way off.   I'm not a fan of using the diagonal for imaging, besides an additional, unneeded optical element, it further complicates the balance problem.  Might actually be easier on a Newtonian.

JW is right, these are for the Tasco collector but there are better alternatives for attaching cameras these days.

Someone save this EQ1/EQ2 before it gets turned into a lamp.

I think that one would probably make a better lamp than it is a telescope mount. I can’t imagine putting an OTA ofmthat ring size on that spindly wiggle-wampus. tongue2.gif

Well this is not really an ad but Don Rothman at Astro Parts Outlet has a Vixen Fluorite refractor for sale. Anybody looking for that rare missing part or mount he might have it. Also says he may be getting out of the business by having someone buy him out?

Terra,

I dont want to digress  but wouldn’t they have made more profit selling a complete kit? Why would anyone other the GoTo Mak winner want to bid on such a uniwue base?

Thanks,

You astroscan fans.  Is this an "original"?  Or is it a later one, like the manual suggests?:

Well, the Astroscan was introduced in 1976 (Astroscan 2001 was the name they came up with via a contest), so 1981 (as on the warranty) would be fairly early. But I don't think this scope is that early. My wife's is an early one (hand-written S/N 18833), and it has Pat. Pend. on the secondary mount (not the earliest style with the circular B&W Edmund Scientific logo, but not the later one with the actual patent number), and a chrome draw tube instead of black. We bought it used around 1987. The original lens cap just had EDMUND indented into the handle. And I think the sighting bracket was also a later addition.

It's a later version. The earlier cap is nostalgic but the later cap is a superior construction. The peep sight has been around a long time as an option. I think the peep sight was included later but I'm not sure.

Earlier versions had less serrations on the focus knobs.  Hard to say if the one posted is USA or China. My gut feeling is USA from appearance and the two eyepieces.

Hey, I have one of these! Really cool little folding reflector. Holds collimation surprisingly well. Haven’t seen another since mine from 2012. Don’t think a lot of those made it over here. From a viewing standpoint I’d say it’s your typical 114mm with a little more magnification due to the longer focal length of 1200mm vs the typical 900mm. The views are pretty decent though. Right now it’s safely “folded” away. Link to mine.

Scott,

Super cool find. It's the ultimate design solution in a country where space is limited. Thanks for sharing.

That turret is really functional/convenient and seemingly well made with very positive click stops. Closeup

Can't believe they sold these two separate.  Don't think they came out of the factory that way (ie, I don't think you could buy the Mak by itself as an OTA).

Hi Stew,

While that particular sample in the auctions most likely originated from the factory as one unit, according to THIS PAGE, the OTA was available separately for a cool 195,000 Yen.

P.S. I don't find it hard to believe it sold separately.  We see this practiced all the time on eBay, AM or CN.  Flippers come in any race and nationality, and the Japanese are not immune to the effects of Capitalism.

P.S.S.  To keep inline with the rules.  Here's a rare one that no one has posted yet, I believe.  SYW Yamamoto 114mm CAT  $300.  That CO, though. shocked.gif
