50 years with a Sears 6344 telescope.

I received this telescope in October 1969.  I had just turned 15 years old.  (I was born in Sept. 1954.)  This was my first telescope.  The serial number is 1013.  This is the first time I've had it assembled in probably 40 years or so.  It's been patiently waiting in its box all of these years.  On a whim, I decided to assemble it and share the photos on here.  I only have an old Samsung Galaxy S3 phone so the photos aren't great, but I hope some folks on here enjoy seeing them.

Cheers!  Bob F. cool.gif

Beautiful scope Bob. I recall when you first posted this scope here on CN. To this day, in my data base, your scope still is the lowest known serial number 6344. And the purchase date of Oct 1969 helps to date the other 6344 scopes as well.

The 1969 Fall/Winter Sears General Catalog No. 239G Page 1334 is the first time the 6344 is advertised. May also be in other catalogs Sears had during the Summer of 1969, but I don't know for sure.

Here is a ref photo of the 1969 Fall/Winter catalog page with your scope listed on the RH side of the page.

Stephen,

THANKS for the catalog page!  I remember it cost $200 but I failed to keep the sales receipt so I didn't have any proof of that.

Yeah, I did post a few photos of it a few years ago but not one of it assembled.  Also, those photos that I posted are no longer available online as I took down the web server that they were stored on.  So, I hope folks don't mind that I posted a few photos of it again.  These new photos (that I took this evening) are stored on CN's server so hopefully they'll be around for awhile.

Cheers!  Bob F.  smile.gif

To bring back a few more memories from Oct 1969, here are a few pics of what some of the scope looked like before it was unwrapped from an example I have. Sorry for the blurry pic of the legs. This example has some of the parts unwrapped, but the scope was never assembled.

Guess they wanted to just look at some of the pretty parts and then just put it all back into the box and lost interest. I may have sent you some of these pics before.

Thanks for that.  I do have those photos saved.  They're just no longer online. I appreciate it. waytogo.gif

Very nice, glad you posted the photos. On a side note, I am impressed that the Dymo label that says October 1969 is still on the box!

Well, in the interest of full disclosure, that's a label I added way back in 1969.  Remember those old label makers?  smile.gif

YES, all my old Dymo labels have fallen off all the stuff I put them on in the late 60's, 70's!

Oh, OK....  NOW I get it.  I thought you might have thought that it was a label from the factory.  Silly me!   I had forgotten that those labels were called Dymo labels.  And yeah, I was very surprised when I opened the box and it was still on there and that it was still legible!  Remember how the white letters would just fade away over time?  lol.gif
