You can open the *.tiff file created by DSS in  Gimp and use Gimp to process  that file.  Yes.

I haven't used GIMP in about 6 years but isn't still 8 bit?

High bit depth support allows processing of images with up to 32-bit per color channel precision and open/export PSD, TIFF, PNG, EXR, and RGBE files in their native fidelity.

Additionally, FITS images can be opened with up to 64-bit per channel precision.
