Dear friends, just arrived the mythical Pentax 105 SD f9,5 from Japan! Perfect and pristine optics and mechanics, wonderful! Thanks to my friend Koji Matsumoto!!!

I've not tested it yet but am quite sure it will amaze me...has anyone one of it?

Seems very rare, and mine has also a red line on the hood which I never saw in the few photos you can find int he web....clear skies!

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

i have owned two Pentax 105SDs and both were/are optically excellent. The first one came with the 7x50 finder and had a rubber protector ring around the dew shield. The second one, which I still own, is an earlier version without the ring and has the 7x35CI (correct image) finder.

This is is the earlier version with 7x35 finder:

This is the later version with protector ring and 7x50 finder:

I have it mounted on the HGM-200 but had to use a TEC200ED as an adapter......

Hi Marcus,

The limit on photo file size often catches me. I send the image I want to post to myself in an email which allows me to resize it before sending. Then I save the resized image in the email to my photos so I can access it to post here.

I was about to say that the 105 SD is the guide scope on what looks like the Pentax 250SD.

I completely agree! For a couple of years I searched for a Pentax 150mm f/12. Never did find one. A couple of friends in Japan are still on the lookout for one, or in the alternative, a Takahashi FC-150. The big Pentax scopes like the one in LarsM’s post, and the Takahashi FCT-200 and above, are beautifully built observatory scopes most of us would love to own. Of course there is that little issue of cost for a scope and observatory to house it in......

Pentax 150 F12 is very rare but the FC-150 f11.3 from Takahashi is REALLY impossible to find, gasp!

It was one of my dream scope for a long period..

BTW they are not only great vintage telescopes but also great performer. Today is possible to achieve the same (more or less) performances with lighter telescopes but their fashion is unarrivable.

While stationed in Japan in 1988 I purchased this Pentax MS-5 GEM.  It had a 125 mm refractor on it at the store but I wanted more aperture so I just purchased the mount and then ordered a Mikage 210 mm F/7.7 Newtonian reflector OTA to put on it.

These Pentax products were amazing.  I still use this telescope every clear night and never in 31 years has it ever experienced the slightest malfunction.  The PE of the GEM has been measured at +- 1.5" which is better than the native PE of premium mounts being built today such as those by Astro Physics, SB, Paramount and 10 Micron.

Beautiful setup Steve! An 8” f/7 or f/8 Newtonian is one of my all time favorite telescopes. Yours is such a classic!

You are absolutely right Paolo - modern scopes can match the performance of the Pentax 150 f/12 and the Tak FC-150 but they do not capture the pure essence of the longer scopes. Just looking at the Pentax 250 f/12 in the photo above makes me say, “Now THAT is a telescope!”

By the way Paolo, I love your reviews! I only wish I could read them in the original Italian.

Hi Marcus,

Love the picture! Both of my 105s came with the same case. I have never seen a 105 with a red line on the dew shield before. It would be interesting to know it’s meaning. Is your end cap silver?

Side topic:  A solution for some Apple computers. I have an Apple Mac Mini running a OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I can resize pics in Pictures, but oddly not in iPhoto.

This may not work in older or newer Apple computers/operating systems.

Back to Pentax large telescopes. I want one.

Hi Lary, yes my end cap on dew shield is silver, very nice and solid.

Would be interesting to know if it means anything.....

Very interesting as both of mine came with black objective covers.
