A time capsule C5, sandcast, "loaded."

To get this out of the way, the price is $995 obo plus shipping. Anticipating some comments, I'll save some of you the trouble:  flame.gif

(I'm content to let the marketplace determine the value)

It does have an "Unusual 1.25” eyepiece holder metal tray." It looks light it fits in with the C5 wedge and may have come from Celestron? I used to have an aftermarket eyepiece tray that was circle of aluminum that fit between a Vixen SP/GP/Clone head and the tripod. You had a little circular shelf with cutouts for 2" and 1.25" eyepieces. A small company, probably one person, made those.

A fairly hard to find Celestron 30mm 5 element eyepiece. 1.25". It looks very much like the 30mm Ultima eyepiece that came out shortly after this one, which was only around a short time.

I started a thread about this eyepiece 2011 because some starting calling this a 'pre-Ultima" (likely true) and it was the same as the Ultima. I had compared the two side by side and could see differences, and tried to point that out. Minor differences visually. (I'm giving up herding cats, fellow amateur astronomers and other Sysiphean tasks). But here is the thread with more info on it and other eyepieces.

https://www.cloudyni...-same-eyepiece/

I almost bought that C5 a while back.  I think it is the best C5 you will ever find. I think it and a pre 1965 4" Unitron would the best scopes set up to just look at.  Love the looks of both scopes.

That's a beautiful C5. I remember seeing it posted on CNs.

One very important cavat. I don't believe it's the right wedge and tripod for a sand cast model. They are both diecast types. My '74 C5 has a sand cast wedge and my '79 C90 Astro (diecast) has the wedge he shows on his C5. I can't say for sure what Celestron did in '76, but I'm fairly sure it's incorrect.

Edit: I very much doubt that Celestron would have made a interim small base diecast wedge when soon thereafter they would be producing diecast models with a diecast wedge shared by the C5 and C8.

It's a C90 base.  I suppose it's possible Celestron may have sold the last of the sand cast with this base.  But you are correct, it's not the sand cast C5 wedge.

Unitron 131C  $1100.  Good deal as only 100 were made. Needs some TLC.

Seems to godo to be true on the EM2. Not sure what class mount that is. Guess it can hold about the same as a SP mount.

Nice mount but I'll take an SP or GP any day...Dual axis drives capability and tons of used parts available...

Me?  I've gotta 'fess out.  Though, perhaps, I haven't been watching the ads on our local craigsist too closely in the past couple years (I have too many scopes), I do check in from time to time.  And I have to say:  It appears to me that the frequency of classic telescope ads has drammatically fallen in the LA area over the past 10 years or so.  lI can't remember the last time I saw an ad for a Cave.  And I've NEVER seen an Optical Craftsmen for sale on CL locally in the 15 years or so I've been looking.

So, next time I see an ad for a classic reflector that folks seem to think is overpriced, I'll compare it to a modern "equivent" (there really aren't any), and comment accordingly, along the lines:  They're better scopes, they should be worth more than the modern gizmoids.

Yes and the oldies even after 40-50 years continue to run.

The modern "equivalent" can't do that.

I'm not going to name any names but I've had my modern stuff fail to function and they want the whole

enchilada sent back me paying the freight of course because "the part is not available for retail sale" I

sold the scope to someone "OTA and a non-working mount thrown in for free."

Or worst yet, a 2 cent part failed on my mounting, the company is still in business but the part is no longer

available. I can't use the mount without this part, thankfully I have a lathe.

My Edmund Scientific 'Extra Heavy Duty' equatorial is probably 50 years old, gets used regularly, works

as well as it did when it was new, and will still be working great long after I'm gone.

About what I paid for my EM-1.  Looks a lot like it, too.  Mine carries everything except my 6" F8 ED.

I can't speak for an EM2.  but my EM-1 is specatularly wonderful.  After polar alignemnt using the polar finder and the tak polarfinder app on my iphone, I don't guide at all for exposures of about 2 minutes on my digital cameras.

It's the most accurate tracking EQ in my collection.

EM-2's are worth about $500 tops.   The are a lighter mount than an EM10 or 11.

Based on the counterweight, they must be lighter-duty than the EM-1, too -- more like a Polaris than a GP/SP.

I have an EM-10 as well.  I carefully measured the PE with a digital camera (DSI).  It was exactly 10"

The EM-1 is more accurate.

Takahshi's specs say EM1, EM2, EM10 & EM11 are all +/- 10" seconds.

Revue 60x910mm, appears to be complete kit and clean paint. Original owner purchased in 60’s and stored since 90’s. Hard to make out maker’s mark. I believe there’s one thread about Revue on CN. No photo of objective.

$200 BIN with $100 shipping but they will refund difference if shipping is less, and they will take loss if shipping is more. 100% positive eBay rating.

Tasco 9TE $100 starting bid or $150 BIN with free shipping. Original owner, appears clean and complete. Discribes objective as dusty.

Could be that folk are buying them up, stockpiling them 2,3,5 (or more) copies deep - for spares, refurbs, restos - even holding them as investments for a future time when today's 'overpriced' will be but a pittance then. There are stories, dark stories, of classic parts being used for ATM projects - frankesteinian creations of Carton tubes and Jaeger objectives mated with Selsi clams and Towa focusers [shudder]. I'd like to think these tales of the Dark Arts are just hearsay, but ? Who can know why and how, precisely, the numbers are dwindling; how many lamps have been created, how many Objective Chandeliers glitter and twinkle in dark halls while their cells, focusers and tubes await the melt?

'Overpriced' is a relative, transitory determination as is 'better' - comparisons are a good thing to do, I'd say.
