I found a guy who has 500 of these and I was planning on getting  a few for $15 each. I was wondering how many people have the #497 with a busted LCD and would like to get one. I'd be happy to get if for you and ship it for a small cost to cover my time and shipping. I hate seeing equipment being thrown away instead of being repaired..

I think we should first ascertain  which LCD this is because I don't think all 497's used the same LCD. I know the Autostar 497 that I have is a 1999 ref C model and the Autostar 497 ref E made in 2001 had a LCD with less contacts than the 1999 model then there is the Audiostar 497 I don't think they use the same LCD as both the 1999 and 2001 models

Andrew Johansen or his mentor Mr Seymour may have answers for us.

PS I tore the ribbon cable of a Audiostar 497 and that was a *&^% to fix so does it come with a ribbon cable?

Gday Piet

You are correct, there were/are at least 2 types of LCD

The early models of handbox used a 24 pin unit and the newer ones use a 14 pin unit
The old ones use Seiko Epson S1D12303 controller codes, the new use the standard HD44780 codes.

My notes show the old version was similar to an

OPTREX DMC-50747NF-AK, and based on the character set used

it would need a S1D123**D16** rom characterset controller

( but i have never seen that confirmed )

I have never heard of anyone finding a replacement for either, ie colour of display and ribbon cable position

All good fun

Thanks for making the point guys. This is the MHS50747-24AG display. This number is written on the ribbon cable. Given the uncertainity, I'm going to buy some and try it on my #497 controller first. I don't know about the character ROM but the display color comes from the RED LED backlighting. The LCD itself has no inherent color.

It looks like a 24 pin unit and I take it you have a 1999 Autostar?

That is correct. I didn't know which year it was since I bought my LX-90 used but I do see a date on the Autostar PCB and it's 1999. I'm hoping that given that the whole code including the -24AG is identical, the character ROM is also the right one but I'll try it out and let you know..

After I told him this is for an Amateur Astro group, he split his 500 unit lot into 10s and reduced the price to $10. Here's the link.

I'm getting 10 units shipped Monday. Will try it and let you know

Well, the LCD works but it's not the same as the original. The original displays red characters on a dark background. The new ones are the opposite. Both are readable in the dark but the original is clearer.

Also the new LCD has a reflective backing sticker that needs to be removed - very carefully - If you don't remove the backing, the backlight won't pass through and you'll need a flashlight to see the characters.

In any case, if you have a busted LCD this is definitely worth getting and installing. You might want to get 2in case you break one while removing the sticker. In my case, while removing the sticker, the LCD developed dark spots but those went away eventually.

Here are the pics of the original and the new respectively

Yes, It does come with the ribbon cable as you can see in the earlier picture above. It fits without any modifications needed.

Ashok,

You might try fooling around in the Autostar's menus (I think the Utility menu?). There is a display contrast adjustment IIRC which might let you adjust to see the text better.

hi, I am trying to revive a 'dead' 250mm LX200 ACF (serial number 107960). It was working three weeks ago but has stopped working recently. The GPS worked until the 'rollover' event on April 6th. The red LED on the control panel illuminates when the switch is activated but the display on the handset does not illuminate. We got given a whole bunch of cables with the telescope and there is no information that we can find that tells us which cable is which? I was advised that there is a fuse on board the telescope but I cannot located one.

I seek any advice that can help bring this telescope back to life.

Thanks in advance.

Doug

Hi Doug, I'm not an expert on that particular scope but am an electrical engg. Perhaps a photograph on your setup and cables might help. The cable to use for the controller is usually pretty obvious. Try posting a separate thread about your problem and other LX200 owners might help.

If you have power to the HBX then it's not the fuse. 95% of mount problems are in the connectors. Of course this whole GPS rollover is creating many issues. If the system looks for the GPS and fails, it should default to manual setup if the software is well designed.

Ashok, did the contrast settings in the Autostar solve the display issue?  e.g. background too bright or looking reversed?

If your Autostar has the narrower cable, the screen from the 494 works, you can find 494s for a lot less than replacement 497s.

Are any of these still available? I need to verify what cable I have but if memory serves I have the larger one. Thanks!

My AutoStar II has the same blank screen problem. It works sometimes but shows mostly gibberish on both lines.
Ashok - Will this LCD swap work for AutoStar II?

I found the same part you used in Amazon:

Lot of 10 MHS50747-24AG Display Assembly 2 x16 LCD 0003 https://www.amazon.c...i_aBG6EbHTBDBJT

It comes in a lot of 10 for $99 + shipping.

If there are others interested in this we can buy a lot and split it.

Very good. I sent a message to the Original poster to see if he has any left. If I don’t hear from him In a couple of days, i will order a lot (10 pieces).

What handset do you have? Are you having the same blank or gibberish display.

Sunrag , that is a good idea.  Many people would be interested in buying this spare part, I suggest that you buy few lots package LCDs individually and sell them on Amazon.com.  You can send them all to Amazon warehouse at once and Amazon will take care of fulfilling individual orders. You would help other members and make a profit from this business. I would have done this myself but I'm currently outside the US.

Gday Amrsaif

Sunrag asked about the ASII

The linked LCD has a 24 pin interface

ie it is only suitable for the very early 495/497 handboxes

The later 497s, ASIIs and 497EP/Audiostars all use a 14 pin interface.
